Well, to be fair he picked an image with no roads, so I think he got the spirit of the thing right.

Re: Socialism
I mean I get it...
Government intervention messes with free markets... nice textbook charts to demonstrate this.
There are going to be the usual suspects... perverse incentives, market distortions etc.
But we have seen that these distortions can be managed and there can be substantial net benefits... there are demonstrations of success.
Insurance companies also lead to perverse incentives and market distortions and these can be worse than government programs...
These are simply other means of covering costs as a group that individuals find difficult to cover for relatively rare events...
I'm guessing the textbooks cover this also.
So listing the ways that government programs mess with free markets is instructive... but it does not, in and of itself, serve as an exclusion for mixing government programs with free markets... when there is good reason to do so.

Re: Socialism
I’d add “net benefits” in place of “solutions”.
Genocide has net benefits, for everyone who isn’t dead. But that doesn’t make it ideal. You have to look long term at this stuff and decide which trade offs are sustainable and desirable, not simply at who benefits in the immediate aftermath.
We’re still paying big Agra to grow food and let it rot in warehouses because of policies that produced “net benefits” to small farms decades ago.

I believe we subsidize gasoline heavily in this country too, though that is something that benefits me as a heavy driver quite a bit. I've heard Europeans pay per litre what it costs us per gallon. Idk if that is still the case.

How much do you pay per gallon in tax? Enjoy your "heavy driver" benefit.heydaralon wrote: ↑Fri Jan 04, 2019 2:20 pmI believe we subsidize gasoline heavily in this country too, though that is something that benefits me as a heavy driver quite a bit. I seriously doubt my tax rate is even close approaching yours, so in my case, it works in my favor. I haven't done the math, so I have no idea how much I am taxed per gallon.Fife wrote: ↑Fri Jan 04, 2019 2:26 pmHow much do you pay per gallon in tax? Just out of curiosity, has tom woods ever done a show on gas subsidies? If the subsidy was removed right now, how much do you think gas prices per gallon would jump? Do you think it would double? I do not really understand how the oil market works, or what sort of fuckery Saudi Arabia is doing, but I have thought about this before.
