A number of years ago I read a really interesting book called the two income trap, or something like that. It described what got us to this place (or the place we at a decade ago) where both parents working is the norm. We basically had a family arms race where the only way to keep up with the Jones was for both parents to work.

I feel like it has now turned into women growing up expecting to have a career. Millenials are waiting longer to start families, which leads to more women starting careers. What was once done to help keep the family afloat is now to keep themselves afloat.

Just wanted to throw those thoughts out there.
Economically, i thought the book was spot-on, but that misses some big points. It expects that women will completely subordinate themselves, and implies that this is fair or desirable. I had hoped we'd get to a place where work would be structured so both parents could get the rewards of both childrearing and work. As for women expecting to have a career, of course, it was awful when that wasn't much of an option. The second generation feminists often wrote that their mothers inspired their feminism - they were smart, capable, ambitious women who never fulfilled their potential. It is a horrible thing to see a person with great intellect or talent spend her life washing clothes and stirring pots. (I feel the same way about men who spent their lives washing cars and not getting meaningful time with their children - the only difference is that no one told them they couldn't do anything else because they were men.)

The two incomes for poor families is a scam.

It sucks cause you need some capital to pull it off, but my wife at home certainly makes us $30K or whatever.

But part of that is getting setup with canning, and getting yourself freezer space to buy a whole animal or cloth diapers or restitch seems or...
When our kids were young and were faced with this issue we did the math. Just shy of 25K to have the kids in day care. Better option is one parent at home until they are school age. PLUS, a helluva lot better for the kids. It's really the only responsible decision.

It is a huge scam. Government pushes it so that they can tax more shit. Leftists push it because it slowly destroys the human family.

Intentionally creating a large cohort of men without families, jobs, and hope for a better future, all the while giving them a clear idea of who the enemy is because you can’t stop gloating about it, is not a smart move.

If you're going solely on the money, work it out to the end of her working life or you won't get the full financial picture. In the last year I worked in a career, most of my after-tax money went to child care. I didn't lose just that amount for the years I didnt work - I never made that kind of money again, even after going back when the kids were in school. You can't count on the money coming back again later once you leave the workforce for years.

No doubt, but I've never heard a 'good' story about them. Usually, the kids end up looking like cases of neglect.

It doesn't need to be the woman staying home with the kids. As I said above, one parent staying with the kids is in the best interest of the family. I was working two jobs at the time. Had my wife been able to produce the same income as me in one or two jobs, I would have GLADLY stayed home with my kids.

I've been debating in other threads about governmental organizations making decisions for people, and it's been argued to me that people are stupid and can't choose what's in their best interest. This subject is good proof that the government doesn't know what's in the best interest of families, as they push for both parents to work and put their kids in day care and younger and younger government schools, Head Start, etc. People can and do make the best choices for their families every day.

laundry becomes a nightmare, I am sure. It's not like you can realistically stockpile shitty cloth diapers to justify a single load of them. Nor would you want to wash them with your clothing. Personally, I would want to run a cleaning cycle after doing a load of them.

The solution here is free diapers no exceptions without apology.
