I just re-watched Smokey and the Bandit. Burt Reynolds was a goddamn hero back in the day. Deliverance is his best film of the 70's though.

The best movie I saw this year in theaters was American Animals. Truly original, very engaging movie. Its a cross between a documentary and a work of fiction. Definitely worth seeing.

Other good films this year:

-Buster Scruggs ( on netflix): Western by Coens. Funny and sad, pretty damn good.
-Mandy: off the wall Nicholas Cage 80's throwback gore/cult film. Beautifully shot which will make you laugh your ass off at the pure weirdness. I predict it will gain a reputation as time passes. Watch the shit out of it real talk.
-Sicario 2: Pretty solid sequel. Not as good as the original, but definitely check it out.
-Leave No Trace: A movie about a veteran and his daughter living in a national park's wilderness in the pacific northwest, who are found by the government and are given housing and the father's struggle's to acclimate to regular life. This is the same director who made Winter's Bone, which was a great movie. Check it out.
-Mom and Dad: Nicholas Cage must need some money, because this is another B movie he did this year which is about a phenomenon where parents suddenly decide to want to murder their children. Pandemonium ensues. Not as good as Mandy, but still entertaining.
-Don't Worry he Won't Get Far on Foot: Biography of the paralyzed cartoonist John Callahan, and how he uses the humor of his offensive cartoons to cope with his alcoholism and paralysis after a car crash. Worth watching.
-The Death of Stalin: about the power struggle after Stalin's Death. Clever shit, probably overrated though. Still liked it

Those are the films I can remember enjoying this year off the top of my head. Feel free to provide your own recommendations. Please no faggy superhero movies of any kind. Yes, I also mean Deadpool 2. That film is just as shitty as every other one. No, its not clever that it uses irony, self awareness and fourth wall breaking. Its shit, and deep down you know how stupid it is to enjoy anything derivative from comic books.

Reaffirm those two are worth watching?

If you are only going to watch 1 movie on my list, watch American Animals. That movie is great. Out of that list, my second favorite was Mandy, though it is filled with gory violence and weird nonsense. It was pretty funny to watch and visually awesome. While I did enjoy all the movies on there, imo 2018 wasn't a great year for film. Every once in awhile you get a year that gives you multiple masterpieces. 2007 was one such year with No Country for Old Men, There Will be Blood, and The Assassination of Jesse James (probably my all time favorite movie). Those films are among my favorites. 1995 was also an amazing year and gave us Casino, Heat, and Nixon, which are also some of my favorite movies. This year didn't really have many offerings. To be honest, maybe that is a good thing, because watching television is not a productive use of time.

I think the battle of Tours would be easier to monetize than Agincourt because they could turn it into this Muslim victim spectacle with Martel being the bad guy and somehow blame it for terrorism today. I would watch either battle on film though, as long as they tried to make it realistic and tuned down the CGI.

He's making a sequel to the Passion of the Christ. I didn't like Passion as much as Apocalypto and Braveheart, but it was a well-made movie. The man has talent. Even the B-movies he acted in after his drunken rant were pretty good. I can't wait for this film to trigger half of America. This will cause SJW's to fucking rage. Its gonna be glorious man.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

7 short stories by the Coen Brothers, set in the old west. Combination of tall tales and, maybe, a more 'real' West than you've ever seen. It's very, very good.

I watched it last night, it was enjoyable.

The Cohen Bros really know how to let a good story tell itself on the screen. They don't out think the story, they just focus on the story.

The Walking Dead is a prime example of a show that is no longer telling a story. The execs behind that show, years ago, thought it should all be about character development and interesting characters, leaving the story to become a zombie. It's a big problem right now in the industry.
