Because the general populace are incapable of accomplishing what the military does, Veterans must be broken, mentally ill, alien creatures to be used, then discarded.

I think they must instinctively know they deserve to be peasants.

I don't think it will be for many more generations that the warrior class will be trampled upon by peasants and merchants. This is really ridiculous when you step back and think about it.

I never said discarded. I said they needed better medical care.

The numbers don't lie though.
20 US veteran suicides a day, 18% of suicides in the country but only 8.5% of the adult population. Army suicide rates rose 80% between 2004 and 2008.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

You are comparing one profession against the entire population. Your article is a lark, serving to reinforce the idea that Soldiers are broken. Soldiers have a suicide rate of 30-32 per 100,000. Let's see how that compares to the high suicide level professions shall we ?

The CDC's occupational suicide list:
1. Farmworkers, fishermen, lumberjacks, others in forestry or agriculture (85 suicides per 100,000)
2. Carpenters, miners, electricians, construction trades (53)
3. Mechanics and those who do installation, maintenance, repair (48)
4. Factory and production workers (35)
5. Architects, engineers (32)
6. Police, firefighters, corrections workers, others in protective services (31)
7. Artists, designers, entertainers, athletes, media (24)
8. Computer programmers, mathematicians, statisticians (23)
9. Transportation workers (22)
10. Corporate executives and managers, advertising and public relations (20)
11. Lawyers and workers in legal system (19)
12. Doctors, dentists and other health care professionals (19)
13. Scientists and lab technicians (17)
14. Accountants, others in business, financial operations (16)
15. Nursing, medical assistants, health care support (15)
16. Clergy, social workers, other social service workers (14)
17. Real estate agents, telemarketers, sales (13)
18. Building and ground, cleaning, maintenance (13)
19. Cooks, food service workers (13)
20. Child care workers, barbers, animal trainers, personal care and service (8)

You see that Soldiers are right in the same spot as similar civilian professions; Police, firefighters, corrections workers, others in protective services. Now, the UK handles stats differently, but you can definitely see that they have higher suicide rates with similar occupations...…….. so, I'm seeing where your health care system is doing any better

I would imagine that cooks in the UK have very high suicide rates due to the ass awful nature of British cuisine. I still have PTSD when I saw someone eating Welsh rare bit. It looked like orange diarrhea on a piece of soggy bread. Yuck. And shepherd's pie is also pretty terrible.

Look at that list of high stress jobs
The CDC's occupational suicide list:
1. Farmworkers, fishermen, lumberjacks, others in forestry or agriculture (85 suicides per 100,000)
2. Carpenters, miners, electricians, construction trades (53)
3. Mechanics and those who do installation, maintenance, repair (48)

6. Police, firefighters, corrections workers, others in protective services (31)
7. Artists, designers, entertainers, athletes, media (24)
8. Computer programmers, mathematicians, statisticians (23)
9. Transportation workers (22)
10. Corporate executives and managers, advertising and public relations (20)
11. Lawyers and workers in legal system (19)
12. Doctors, dentists and other health care professionals (19)
13. Scientists and lab technicians (17)
14. Accountants, others in business, financial operations (16)
15. Nursing, medical assistants, health care support (15)
16. Clergy, social workers, other social service workers (14)
17. Real estate agents, telemarketers, sales (13)
18. Building and ground, cleaning, maintenance (13)
19. Cooks, food service workers (13)
20. Child care workers, barbers, animal trainers, personal care and service (8)

There is likely a correlation and perhaps causation with most dangerous jobs as well. Also the highest stress jobs are predominantly Male and White. We always hear how being a mother or teacher is so fucking hard. Well, apparently they are not under the kind of stress we've been led to believe.

Monty, if you used that argument against something you personally care about, then I think you'd see how fucked up it is. Somehow, because the poor argument is used against guns, you do not see it.
What I see is case after case of guys with mental illnessess shooting up schools, nightclubs shopping malls etc.
There is no way to prove whether stricter controls would work in the States unless they are passed across the whole country.
It's no good having strict controls in "liberal cities" if you can buy guns with no background check or cooling off period at an out of town gun show and then return to the city fully armed.
Good thing the gun show loophole is kind of a myth and a misnomer. Background checks are always needed when you buy from a gun store no matter where the sale is made-- private citizens selling guns to each other is where the background check isn't needed, which or may not be at a gun show.

Perhaps this seems like semantics though, since it still means that there are conditions where a background check isn't needed in the US, but the actual law, I think, should be known anyway.
