My mom was Port Commissioner here in Ephrata.
Out at the port are some old World War II Barracks.

They used to rent one of the old run down buildings to the Wheatland Whirlers (Square Dancing Club) for $5 a month.

They kept up the building, which the port figured was better than a decaying one.

The Obama Admin sent the port a letter demanding they raise the rent to $1000 a month. So the whirlers disbanded and now the building is condemned.

It all makes sense now.

I appreciate the Thanksgiving spirit of bailing people out of jail so they can spend the holiday with loved ones. I'm also glad to see they are working to help set these people up with help to hopefully keep them out of jail in the future.

But this statement is just

Yes Malcom, they were put in jail simply because they couldn't afford bail to get out of jail.

It's a true statement, though. People waiting in jail for trial because they cannot afford bail is evil. If they cannot even afford the 10% or whatever you need to make bail, then they aren't exactly a flight risk. Put a lien on their home or automobile.

I'd fucking get rid of bail altogether. The only reason they do it is because the duress of long imprisonment while the prosecution keeps dragging out a trial is enough to cause a lot of poor people to just plead guilty, even when they are innocent. If somebody is a flight risk, then put a monitor on them.

Hell. if somebody languishes in jail for trial, is found innocent, and suffered economic and personal costs, then I would love to take it out of the prosecutor's personal wealth and future income.

No, it's not. The reason they are in jail is because they are either guilty of breaking a law or thought to be guilty of breaking a law. More likely it's the former not the latter. They may still be in there because they can't afford bail, but that is not the sole reason for them being there. I bet you believe it's just full of guys who are there because their woman lied to get them put in jail. Cue STA rant on how all women are dishonest and set men up in 3,2,1.......

Bail is a major racket, guys. I don't want to get into explaining it today, but I don't think this crowd needs me to mansplain how it is a total rent-seeking operation anyway. If any of you need an explanation, let me know and I'll get to it.
