It's always good to review sound shooting fundamentals from time to time.

Did you buy a gun yet? I remember awhile back you were talking about getting one for self defense.

I haven’t yet, but it’s in the works. Planning to get a pump shotgun.

Will you be doing any hunting? I have been trying to get into more outdoor stuff lately. I got a book on Florida plants and have been trying to learn which ones are edible. I also did some canoeing and hiking. There are quite a few parks within an hour from me, which I am grateful for. I used to whittle, and I started that again too. I am dipping my toes into the outdoors. I have a sleeping bag and an old tent, so once I get a few days off in a row I'm gonna do some cold weather camping. Well, cold weather for Florida.

Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are pretty much considered the gold standard of pumps. But really pumps are all super reliable. You can get a maverick 88 for a couple hundred and its basically a remington 870 clone made in Mexico. If you get a field model like mine was you could easily hunt with it. I dont buy the hype regarding short shotguns personally but the US armed forces have been fielding them for over a hundred years and is remarkable in being pretty much the only standing army to have taken such a keen liking to them. We used a ram action 5 shot, basically sawed off barrel short shotgun called a trench gun during wwi and it was so devastating in close quarters it caused germans butt hurt and they started threatening Americans that they would execute any pow with one. Americans responded by threatening to execute germans with a particularly nasty bayonet blade iirc. Anyway, I dont advocate getting a short barrel if it's going to be your only gun because a standard and long barrel are also good for hunting and you wont hardly ever truly need a short barrel. They make sabbot rounds that perform better than a rifle ballisticly under 100 yrds. Not terribly accurate but good enough to hunt buck with and just change the choke out for whatever pattern you want for bird hunting. Really you can hunt anything with a shotgun.

I’d like to take up hunting, once my kids are older. For now, it’s just a defensive measure in the event of Collapse.

Right so the main benefit of having a shorter barrel, besides portability, which is huge if you are using it as a secondary, is the greater spread. This is good for close quarters and faster reaction times but I fail to see the point in home defense. First of all modern pumps will let you chamber seven magnum sized rounds iirc. So it seems like a poor excuse to sacrifice utility in the name of a slightly better spread at sub 10 yrds. I also dont understand the ccq warriors that claim a longer barrel is a liability. To some degree it certainly is as it's easier to grab and wrest away but in a home defense situation this doesnt make sense to me. Like, in what world are you alarmed enough to be alerted to intruders and still able to be blind sided in your own fucking home? Especially if you have been drilling your house and slicing the pie around all vecors. In the field, in an alien building, sure a shorter barrel makes more sense but in your own home it's like whatever. I would hate to see anyone that cant justify it buy two shotguns which is why I advocate for standard or long barrel. Shotguns are a multitool and a short barrel is like a specialized tool.
