Historical primary and secondary sources of interest

Post by BjornP »

Nuke created a historical photos thread once, so I'd figure I'd try to make a primary and secondary source thread. My choice for the day is also a historical artifact:

https://media.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/col ... 23%23S.jpg

The source, both a primary (for its description of what's happening in his time) and secondary (in describing the first Christian missionary's successes in China). I picked the part of the text after the first Christian missionary, a Syrian described as Olopun, succesfully partitioned the Chinese emperor for the right to proselytize in his realm and gave the Christian missionaries (I'm guessing they'd have to have been more than just Olopun coming from Syria. Or it's one of the converts who raised the stele in thanks to the Chinese emperors.

Anyway, here's the text:
In the seventh month of the year A.D. 638 the following imperial proclamation was issued:

"Right principles have no invariable name, holy men have no invariable station; instruction is established in accordance with the locality, with the object of benefiting the people at large. The greatly virtuous Olopun, of the kingdom of Syria, has brought his sacred books and images from that distant part, and has presented them at our chief capital. Having examined the principles of this religion, we find them to be purely excellent and natural; investigating its originating source, we find it has taken its rise from the establishment of important truths; its ritual is free from perplexing expressions, its principles will survive when the framework is forgot; it is beneficial to all creatures; it is advantageous to mankind. Let it be published throughout the Empire, and let the proper authority build a Syrian church in the capital in the I-ning May, which shall be governed by twenty-one priests. When the virtue of the Chau Dynasty declined, the rider on the azure ox ascended to the west; the principles of the great Tang becoming resplendent, the Illustrious breezes have come to fan the East."

Orders were then issued to the authorities to have a true portrait of the Emperor taken; when it was transferred to the wall of the church, the dazzling splendor of the celestial visage irradiated the Illustrious portals. The sacred traces emitted a felicitous influence, and shed a perpetual splendor over the holy precincts. According to the Illustrated Memoir of the Western Regions, and the historical books of the Han and Wei dynasties, the kingdom of Syria reaches south to the Coral Sea; on the north it joins the Gem Mountains; on the west it extends toward the borders of the immortals and the flowery forests; on the east it lies open to the violent winds and tideless waters. The country produces fire-proof cloth, life-restoring incense, bright moon-pearls, and night-luster gems. Brigands and robbers are unknown, but the people enjoy happiness and peace. None but Illustrious laws prevail; none but the virtuous are raised to sovereign power. The land is broad and ample, and its literary productions are perspicuous and clear.

The Emperor Kau-tsung respectfully succeeded his ancestor, and was still more beneficent toward the institution of truth. In every province he caused Illustrious churches to be erected, and ratified the honor conferred upon Olopun, making him the great conservator of doctrine for the preservation of the State. While this doctrine pervaded every channel, the State became enriched and tranquillity abounded. Every city was full of churches, and the royal family enjoyed luster and happiness. In the year A.D. 699 the Buddhists, gaining power, raised their voices in the eastern metropolis; in the year A.D. 713, some low fellows excited ridicule and spread slanders in the western capital. At that time there was the chief priest Lohan, the greatly virtuous Kie-leih, and others of noble estate from the golden regions, lofty-minded priests, having abandoned all worldly interests; who unitedly maintained the grand principles and preserved them entire to the end. The high-principled Emperor Hiuen-tsung caused the Prince of Ning and others, five princes in all, personally to visit the felicitous edifice; he established the place of worship; he restored the consecrated timbers which had been temporarily thrown down; and re-erected the sacred stones which for a time had been desecrated.

Some of the original parchment rolls of the accounts of King Edward survive. Two references to the War Wolf, in Latin read

The first means "To Master Alexander le Convers, for money paid by him to the carpenters making the engine called 'War Wolf', and other workers working (also on the engine), in May and June 1304, 10 shillings on 7 June 1304." The following record reads "To Thomas de Viridus Campus, the queen's valet, recompensed at the King's hand for his labours in the making of the 'War Wolf', which the King ordered to be made to slight Stirling Castle, £40."[2]

Reginald the Janitor was paid wages for guarding its beams for forty nights in June and July 1304
When disassembled, the weapon would fill 30 wagons. It took five master carpenters and forty-nine other labourers at least three months to complete.[1]

A contemporary account of the siege states, "During this business the king had carpenters construct a fearful engine called the loup-de-guerre (sic., War wolf), and this when it threw, brought down the whole wall."

Even before construction could be completed, the sight of the giant engine so intimidated the Scots that they tried to surrender. Edward sent the truce party back inside the castle, declaring, "You don't deserve any grace, but must surrender to my will."[1] Edward decided to carry on with the siege and witness for himself the power of the masterful weapon. The Warwolf accurately hurled missiles weighing as much as three hundred pounds (140 kg) and levelled a large section of the curtain wall.
No mention of the chief engineer's name.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Those were my ancestors asshole. Guess what, we have discovered that Scots were actually a race of albino Africans. You following me? We both know what needs to happen. Send the reparation payment in bitcoin to my account. My civil rights lawyer will give you all the relevant details. Monte will also be contacted so that he can make a payment as well. You both are complete scumbags, replete with Patriarchal worship and sins that have permanently scarred the soul of your ethnic group. England has always harassed and demeaned my people. A big reason why Kilts are a Scotish phenomenon is because we saw centuries ago that gender roles are a mere social construct, and a man wearing a dress is an embodiment of bravery and open-mindedness. It has taken your pitiful nation hundreds of years to reach our level of Enlightenment. For that you have my pity. But I am gonna need to see some money wired in soon. This could get ugly...

I read that wasn't a real thing. If it was though, I wonder if the Lord was obligated to fuck every single newly wed wife in his area. What if the new bride was fat and ugly? That would be a great way to turn the tables on him. Marry some diseased old prostitute or even a goat, then legally divorce them the morning after the Lord consummated the marriage. #resist
