I've read that stuff before...………… maybe that's all it took. In lack of any other real reason I'd take that one.
Well now we’re starting Cold War 2.0 with China, Russia, Iran, while they try to do the same. Only difference is the nukes.
The Saudis and UAE wanted (or we wanted) a natgas pipeline through Syria. That meant "regime change" since Syria/Assad were friendly with Russia.

Oh yeah, and before the Iraq war (in 2000) Saddam was talking about selling Iraqi oil in Euros.

The U.S. needs to protect the Petrodollar or it's "game over".
Exactly. Now the Chinese have created an oil contract of their own, and buddies up with Russia.

Suddenly our “trade deficit” is priority one.

We dropped the gold standard for the petro-standard, but that really boiled down to the "military might" standard. That can only last so long though, there's a long history of proof on that.

Why would China want to buy oil with anything else than dollars? They have more than they know what to do with.

Because it gives them control over the global oil market, supports their currency, and allows infinite borrowing. They’re trying to get their own blank check, like ours.

It’s not about China being able to buy oil. It’s about China creating a global market for their currency.

That is the part a lot of folks miss. China is sitting on enormous amounts of cash reserves in USD. They hold a sizable portion of our national debt.

It's sort of like how Julius Caesar operated. He owed everybody money. It became necessary for them to support his cause in order to get their money back or see any return on their investments.

We think of the lender-debtor relationship as a one-sided power relationship, with the lender having the power and influence. But that only works as such because there exists a state to enforce the prerogatives of lenders. There exists no such thing at the sovereign level between superpowers. China would have to go to war to force terms. But they cannot win those objectives without more costs than it is worse.

At the sovereign level, and between major powers, the lender-debtor power relationship inverts if the debtor is stronger than tbe lender, or the threat of mutual destruction makes enforcing terms irrelevant.

The lender-debtor relationship is only a power relationship with the lender on top when there exists enough power to enforce the lender's will. Either the lender is much stronger than the debtor, or there exists some third party stronger than either of them.

Without a natural power imbalance, I think the relationship favors the debtor since he can choose to pay the lender, or not.. The lender becomes invested in the self-interest of the debtor.

Must treasury bonds are held by domestic investors. China has around 5% of it.
