It was Samuel Johnson.
He was referring to false patriotism ie using it for personal gain and to whip up votes.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Speaking of Samuel Johnson, have you ever heard about the Ossian Fraud? It is pretty fascinating. The myths from Ossian sparked a shit load of 19th century Nationalist movements, that reverberated well into the 20th. Johnson knew that James Macpherson did not find some ancient Celtic manuscript, and asked to see the original text, but MacPherson declined. Monte, you might enjoy reading about this.

Oh yes of course. I beleive him and you both share an equally remarkable talent in discerning between false patriotism and sincere patriotism. Indeed you both seem to be keen intellects in that field of science.

He makes a compelling case. Celts are physically incapable of producing ballads, oral or otherwise. Only capable of stealing other people's culture.
