The problem is, if Feinstein had done (what I, at least, think was) the right thing, and it some how got out later that she didn't act on Ford's accusations, her constituents would have a shit-fit.

I think Feinstein had another chance to do it right. She should have laid out to the committee that she had this letter, but couldn't vouch for the veracity of the claims. The committee could have done their due diligence at the appropriate step in the process.
