Got it. You wanted to talk about oranges while I was talking to Martin about apples. Yeah, they aren't the same thing. The term "Free Speech Warrior" =/= "Concept of Free Speech.

Re: Free Speech Warrior
Huh? You are trying to equate any talk of the term "Free Speech Warrior" with talk of the concept of Free Speech, which was only ever a table for One. Did you want to discuss the term "Free Speech Warrior" as it applies in current day lexicon?

Re: Free Speech Warrior
Can you expound on the idea that one can use the freedom of speech to "silence" somebody?
The lie, as I see it, is in the fact that free speech proponents genuinely want to protect freedom of speech, whereas social justice warriors use the word justice in an Orwellianism sense; i.e. men accused of rape should be assumed guilty, which is the opposite of justice, or white people should be discriminated against, etc.
If so-called free speech proponents wanted to protect their own speech while censoring opposing speech, then I think there could be a point to this. But, really, what you see is the tired SJW tactic of pretending to be a neutral party who tries to equate both sides in an effort to bring decent people down to the debased level of the left.

Re: Free Speech Warrior
To advocate for the Devil here, I think there are obviously different ways to take the term 'free speech.'
The first, constitutionally protected version would be something like 'speech without prior restraint.'
The second, and the one being used pejoratively in a phrase like Free Speech Warrior, would be 'speech without consequences.'

What's speech without consequences? There's always consequences to speech; often people don't like them so they attempt restained speech.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 5:55 amTo advocate for the Devil here, I think there are obviously different ways to take the term 'free speech.'

I agree, and that is where the parity lies, I suppose. An SJW will try to deny a speaker an opportunity to speak beforehand (which is bad), and the FSW believes there shouldn't be negative consequences for speech (which is stupid). To what extent anyone actually believes this... I couldn't say, but some speech is subject to pretty sharply diminishing returns in the marketplace of ideas.Martin Hash wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 5:59 amWhat's speech without consequences? This forum is a pretty good microcosm but I learned my position on Speech from FB where I was brigaded, slandered, restricted & banned. Notice how all of those are all limits on Speech.Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 6:06 amI agree, and that is where the parity lies, I suppose. Re: Free Speech Warrior
Other interesting Free Speech issues:
I hate Yelp and don't use it. I have been negatively impacted by reviewers comments to such an extent that I could not move forward with what I was trying to do. I could not run ads in magazines for my software after comments were attached because the haters would simply queue up 5 or 6 blistering bad reviews and that ad lost way more sales than it gained. Run an ad, expect a 5-fold decrease in sales.
This is a forum I used for 8 years to promote myself. It didn't get a lot of traffic but if I got some, I'm assuming they got a good impression of me (or didn't care). Then I let other people post. I didn't care what was posted, literally calling it "Free Speech Space," and lots of stuff got posted here that just couldn't get up anywhere else. I don't think that hurt me one way or another because the people it alienated could simply not post (and didn't). However, there was a problem every time I tried to promote myself on my own forum, I'd get the equivalent to Yelp reviews. The forum actually became a drag on my own ambitions and I had to limit Speech to get any benefit out of it.
I'm still trying to put the Free Speech thing together in my head.
