Weather Channel - Florence Edition

Post by Kath » Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:31 am

Some observations on their *cough* top-notch reporting *cough* of Florence.

First off, just a few minutes ago I was informed that today is the last day of Fall. Damn, it went fast!

The reporting on this storm was horrid. Some notes I made -

-- OMG, OMG! Look! A piece of tin!!!

-- OMG, OMG! Look! A tree branch!

--Graphic showing 500,00 something or other - people without power? Something like that. Is that 50K with a misplaced comma or 500K with a missing zero?

--Intra Coastal - They called it Inner coastal and Inter Coastal, but I never heard anyone pronounce it correctly. It was quite grating, since they were saying it 100 times/hour. They are the weather channel, FFS, you would think at least one person there would know it's INTRA.

--A random WC dude was holding a broken tree branch in my hand. Him: "Watch how I can turn it into a projectile when I throw it in the air" -throws in air, creating a flying projectile.

--Reporter standing in the middle of an empty parking lot trying to stand upright - how do they know reporter won't get hit with a random projectile, especially since they are creating flying projectiles, themselves?

--Some reporter dude bracing himself against the wind - looked like he was having a hard time standing up. Cameraman sold him out, panned camera to a couple walking right behind him, casually walking without a care in the world.

OMG these guys suck. Great camera work, though. It passed the time while slaving over some tedious busywork at work.

It's worse than that, Kath, this is the last day of SUMMER. Fall hasn't arrived yet.

Got it. WC was the culprit - you were simply reporting their incompetence.

They are morons. Nerd doesn't respect many people there - just a couple of the meteorologists. He met Cantori during Ike - they were at the same hotel. Cantori is a pussy - afraid of the smallest amounts of wind.

I only watch WC during storms like these because they are the only ones to cover it without getting into why it is/isn't {insert current president's name here}'s fault.

Consider the millions of people they convinced to evacuate this do-nothing storm who live paycheck-to-paycheck. Next time there is a hurricane coming, do you think they will evacuate, even if that time is for real?

This shit was dangerous that they did.

Lol - just stay home this time - when the water goes over your roof, just swim out. You'll be fine.

Hoping I-95 isn’t wiped out in either of the Carolinas. It’s a long diversion to take I-75.

Harry!

Don't bet on it... Yesterday, 2,000+ roads were closed in NC. They didn't explain how the total was counted - not sure if that counts dead end neighborhood streets and whatnot, but, I'd stay away. Even if open by the time you need it, it's likely to be chaotic. The flooding is insanity - very reminiscent of Katrina, if you look at the aerial views. One of the rivers is 62 feet above flood stage. It's rather nasty in NC right now.

Now, however, all lanes on I-95 in South Carolina have reopened. But some sections of the interstate in North Carolina still are closed, officials warned. Several sections of I-95 remain flooded in North Carolina as of Wednesday, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

I know N.C. has worse flooding but are a lot of part of S.C. badly flooded to? I try not to watch news much so I don't know. Curious though.
