Is leadership necessarily a sign of intelligence?

Intelligence measuring is a game for academics, which means quantifiable success never enters any of the equations. Those who can, do.

Sure, but simply leading or even rising to the top does not automatically signify intelligence, even if I agree it does generally. How many bosses have you worked for that are complete idiots? Most weren't but I have a few I can think of, the assistant manager from my last job that was picked over me because of her glorious tig ol bitties, for example. Meritocracy isn't always the metric that we live under. I probably would have picked her too.

But anyway, here we're talking about two specific individuals though, DJT and GWB, so broad generalizations are less relevant.

The Skillset of a good leader doesn't require Academic Intelligence. Engineers are generally more intelligent than average folks, high level Engineers are brilliant people, but as a rule, Engineers make horrible Leaders because the thought process that gives you a brilliant Engineer makes you pretty horrible with people.

There are skills great leaders have that are nearly impossible to quantify. Such as, Great Leaders See around corners. Which means they can see problems and opportunities before the average person and set themselves and their group up for success. In other words, they think outside the box. How do you quantify that ?

All the experts saw no way Trump could win, and certainly not have the success he has had, but he saw it.

Would you voluntarily follow someone you considered dumber than yourself?

Yeah yeah, be your own boss, I know where you're going. It's not beyond the realm of possibility to deal with inept leadership for a steady paycheck

I thought the 'who is smarter between two alleged idiots' conversation would be more fun than yet another philosophical meritocracy discussion

I think GWB is dumber. Prove me wrong. Or better yet prove me right

Nah, I meant in a situation, let’s say a natural disaster, would you follow anyone you considered less intelligent than yourself?

Some assistant manager in some company doesn’t lead shit. Middle management as a whole doesn’t lead shit. They manage and supervise. The CEO leads. You won’t find a bunch of idiot CEOs because they succumb to market forces quickly and are put out to pasture. Idiot management, on the other hand, is not unusual.

I suspect that in life, when you get to choose who to follow, you don’t choose people you find more ignorant or dumber than yourself. In fact, by virtue of following the leadership of another you imply a faith in their superior abilities, at least in the topic for which you follow their lead.
