Assuming that this is true, is it good or bad that a) Trump ordered that the US military kill Assad, and b) a General ignored the elected Commander-in-Chief's order, presumably on the ground that he believed his own judgment should reign? Bonus question: is there a Deep State?

Killing Assad, or any other country's leader, with the military sounds like a bad idea. It's not, in general, what the military is for - that's a job for a CIA assassin or something, a rigged "accident", or a paid off "rebel group" to take care of.
"Plausable deniability" of your direct involvement is the key there.

I can see Trump saying that
"Cant we just kill this guy?"
"No that's a bad idea"
"BS I want this guy dead I'm the fucking president make it happen"

We took out Yamamoto, and that guy was cool as shit for an enemy. We are definitely about killing leaders. Like, who doesn't target C&C of their enemy??Ph64 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 2:56 amKilling Assad, or any other country's leader, with the military sounds like a bad idea. Woodward’s book of non-cited, secret sources, says everything the Dan Carlins of the world suspect is true about the Trump administration.
Instant best seller. Let the media cycle of “we knew it all along” commence.
