I just ran a political campaign where I acted in my usual manner when the hordes followed me from FB page to FB page with ad hominem attacks. I never called names and I never got angry. Half a dozen people recognized my restraint and clever repartee, so I thought the tactic was working. I wondered why I was the ONLY candidate that would respond and interact THEN THE ELECTION HAPPENED. I talked to dozens of people afterwards who witnessed me online and they all said they were swayed by the amount of invective leveled against me personally, and it would be better if I didn't post. I thought about it for a couple weeks then decided I like to post, but I won't be repeating my previous nonchalant attitude, ESPECIALLY in my own forum.

He's saying that, by engaging with the public, he opens himself up to a torrent of bullshit and invective. That invective sways votes. That it's not reason and debate that sway votes, but who gets the least amount of shit dumped on them.

Yeah, that's an uncomfortable truth. As society melts, we're watching the lowest common denominator rise to the top of the podium. And somehow, it seems to be affecting even the Silent Majority.

I don't have a good solution, but it is a serious problem, and getting worse. Generally, one would hope for a superstar debater to rise above it all, and find some common truths that we can agree on. But one can't counter an endless wave of nonsense from the ignorant.
