It seems logical that a meteor strike could set off volcanos.

I really don't have a position. But apparently this is a big argument in paleontology.
Problem: there *was* a huge impact. The crater is off the coast of Mexico right now. It coincided with the mass extinction event.

A meteor setting off volcanoes on other side of the planet seems like a stretch, unless it was pretty big, in which case the volcanoes wouldn't really be an issue.

I think there are others from the same event as well. It was like the Shoemaker-Levy strike on Jupiter, but the debris hit Earth instead.
