According to BroadbandNow, there are currently 2,566 internet providers in the United States. Of their list, 1,230 specifically provide wired connections, and only a handful have complete coverage across the entirety of the United States. Furthermore, a number of companies on their list are subsidiaries of the larger companies that most consumers have heard of, like AT&T or Comcast. It’s even hard to get a sense of how much cable there is—a four-year research study by the University of Wisconsin estimated that the United States has 113,000 miles of long-haul fiber, but that doesn’t even begin to factor in the miles of old coaxial and copper that remain the primary internet connection for many homes across America.

Literally the way it was just a few years ago.pineapplemike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:47 pmwhat restrictions would be placed on the government if net neutrality was adopted? what neutralities would he guaranteed? you make a strong case for the globalist internet monopoly being absolute, but what benefits should i take from surrendering that monopoly to the government? someone posted that internet regulation bill that was being circulated by the democrats, it didn't look like it had neutrality in mind
I think social media networks might need anti-trust cases against them, but I do not really know how that would realistically play out.
*If* we had net neutrality, than despite the huge hurdle of overcoming the network effect, it will at least be possible to establish free speech competition.
That still leaves us with fuckery at the domain, DNS, and DDOS level. Those can be solved through legislation.
Obama really fucked us with the ICAAN thing. Not sure how to fix that either.

MORE BIG TECH ELECTION MEDDLING: TWITTER BLOCKS CALI. GOP CANDIDATE’S AD
A campaign ad for a California Republican congressional candidate was banned by Twitter Thursday, in what is being seen as a deliberate act of midterm election meddling.
Twitter cited “obscene” content for blocking Elizabeth Heng’s ad, which discusses her family’s struggle fleeing Cambodia following the rise of Pol Pot and the brutal Khmer Rouge communist regime.

You can somewhat affect the government - bring a First Amendment case, or challenge the FCC. You can call Comcast's call center all year, and they'll laugh in your face.pineapplemike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:47 pmwhat restrictions would be placed on the government if net neutrality was adopted? what neutralities would be guaranteed? you make a strong case for the globalist internet monopoly being absolute, but what benefits should i take from surrendering that monopoly to the government? someone posted that internet regulation bill that was being circulated by the democrats, it didn't look like it had neutrality in mind

I guess that's why multiple cases brought to SCOTUS all resulted in putting a stop to domestic spying by the NSA...oh wait.

I agree that it might not work. But it can't be much worse.Okeefenokee wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 6:45 pmI guess that's why multiple cases brought to SCOTUS all resulted in putting a stop to domestic spying by the NSA...oh wait.
Comcast does not have a First Amendment.

Forgot to share this with y'all,
Patriot. CEO of @Gab I'm fighting for a better internet that puts people first and promotes free speech for all. Exodus 8:2-7
- 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs on your whole country. 3 The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people, and into your ovens and kneading troughs. 4 The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’ ” 5 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.’ ” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

Comcast has no competitors. They have a sectioned area of the country, in which to do business. You will never have the choice between Comcast and another cable provider.Okeefenokee wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 6:53 pmComcast can't print money.

Don't even mention Dish/DirecTV - their internet service is comparable to dial-up.
