Man U are well known because they are the most successful English team of all time. They are also the team which generates the most money at around a billion a year.
Manchester, like many other large cities, has more than one team simply because of its size.
Liverpool has Everton plus Liverpool in the top league plus other teams in the lower leagues.
Birmingham has Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham FC.
Glasgow has Celtic plus Rangers.
These teams create a great rivalry and to some fans beating their rivals in the local derby is more important than league success.
London has many teams including Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Westham wanderers, Millwall and many others.
The 4 national leagues have 92 teams but there are dozens of lower leagues and regional leagues.
Basically the answer to your question is that the English are football crazy....

Generally the difference between European team sports and American is that in Europe we have a multilayered league system were the worst teams get demoted and the top teams promoted every year. Sometimes there is a playoff where the promoted team needs to beat a demoted team to earn its spot. This is grossly simplified and varies by sport and country. The idea of closed leagues is frowned upon.
A city with a lot of fans or with teams that can get a large area, even global, fan support will be able to have several teams in the top division.
The advantage of this system is that you sometimes get the odd fairy tale story of small teams quickly advancing through the systems and finally playing the really big guys. Look up Östersunds FK. A team from a small town in northern Sweden that played in the 4th division in 2011 and ended up playing against Arsenal in the knock out stages of the Europa League in 2017-18 after advancing to the top division and winning the Swedish Cup.
