Obama administration placed children with human traffickers, report says

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) initiated the six-month investigation after several Guatemalan teens were found in a dilapidated trailer park near Marion, Ohio, where they were being held captive by traffickers and forced to work at a local egg farm. The boys were among more than 125,000 unaccompanied minors who have surged into the United States since 2011, fleeing violence and unrest in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

“It is intolerable that human trafficking — modern-day slavery — could occur in our own backyard,” Portman said in a written statement. “What makes the Marion cases even more alarming is that a U.S. government agency was responsible for delivering some of the victims into the hands of their abusers.”

So Trump just reverses his policy:
The Trump administration changed its story on family separation no fewer than 14 times before ending the policy

First it was a deterrent. Then it wasn’t.

It was a new Justice Department policy. Then it wasn’t.

The Trump administration was simply following the law. Then it said separations weren’t required by law.

It could not be reversed by executive order. Then it was.

President Trump’s political gambit to force an immigration bill through Congress backfired Wednesday amid a series of wildly contradictory statements — which you can see for yourself in the video above — from a White House that has been without a communications director since Hope Hicks left in March.

As outrage grew over Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy on migrant family separations, White House officials could not even agree on what was happening at the southern border.

“This administration did not create a policy of separating families at the border,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Monday.

On Tuesday, Marc Short, the White House director of legislative affairs, said it was indeed a policy.

“This is not a policy that people are excited about,” he said.

When a reporter asked Nielsen on Monday whether the policy was being used as a deterrent, she called the question “offensive.”

Hours later, Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Fox News Channel’s Laura Ingraham that yes, the policy was meant to send a “message” to immigrants crossing the border illegally.

For days, Trump, Sessions and Nielsen insisted that family separation was required by law. Then White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN that “nobody said” the law mandated family separation.

When asked about the policy in May, Nielsen testified there was “training information” for officials tasked with separating families. Then in June, Manuel Padilla Jr., Border Patrol chief for the Rio Grande Valley, told reporters that no “separation process” existed.

Even the "fair and Balance" news is reporting it:
Trump signs executive order to stop family separations at border

President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to allow children to stay with parents caught crossing the border illegally -- moving to stop the family separations that have triggered a national outcry and political crisis for Republicans.

Another week in the Trump administration...

Can't say it's boring.

It seems like this is simply collateral damage from the "zero tolerance" move...

More illegals being detained... more kids being separated... more media hype about it.

But it doesn't seem like Trump set out to separate kids from their parents as part of the policy...

Or am I getting it wrong?

Last thing I read suggests that the key factor was tougher legal prosecution of border crossers... resulting in detentions that will exceed limits where minors usually stay with their families.

I can't say that it's not boring. BUT it's an existential nightmare, for many. While your country has legalized weed:
Canadian lawmakers approved landmark legislation on Tuesday to fully legalize marijuana.

The move will make Canada the second country in the world to legalize cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes nationwide. Uruguay was the first to fully legalize the drug.

Bill C-45, also known as the Cannabis Act, was first introduced on April 13, 2017, in a bid to legalize and regulate the recreational use of weed. The bill passed in the House of Commons that November and then passed in the Senate on Tuesday night by a vote of 52-29, with two abstentions.

Medicinal use of the drug has been legal in Canada since 2001.

It's not even the detaining that got the most heat from, but the part of forcibly tearing children from their parents (and to make things worse he did that as a political tool as well). AND this is going to lead to lawsuits as well (at least one has already been reported to be in the process of happening). Yeah, this is going to have negative effects for years to come, IMO.
A Guatemalan mother who crossed the border illegally in May with her 7-year-old son has sued the Trump administration, accusing officials of forcibly taking away her child as punishment for coming to the U.S. to seek asylum.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Guatemalan mother, Beata Mariana de Jesus Mejia-Mejia, describes being taken to a holding cell with her son after being apprehended by Border Patrol agents on May 19 near San Luis, Arizona.

The 39-year-old woman told the agents she was escaping severe violence in Guatemala and death threats, including death threats by her husband against her and her son, according to a copy of the lawsuit, first reported by The Daily Mail.

Yeah, you got the part about "Trump didn't set out to separate kids from their parents" bit wrong, IMO. Trump DID set out to separate kids from their parents as some kind of political maneuver which failed since he literally had his own party literally trying to dodge the political suicide (well at least their political suicide) for the upcoming Mid-Terms, for Trump to end it and also his very own Ivanka told him it also looked bad as well:
Mr Trump said his daughter, Ivanka, had told him the situation with the families looks bad, one politician said.

Holding the children in the same facilities as the adults is illegal. Obama used to do it. A federal judge forced him to stop.

Holding children in separate facilities is legal and happens every day all across the world. Convicts don't take their kids to prison with them. Kids in juvy don't get to bring their parents.

Releasing anyone with children because you don't want to separate them and because you can't hold them together means criminals will use children to smuggle drugs across the border and to traffic children as sex slaves and so on, which is exactly what happened when Obama did it.
