Re: Entitlements on path to insolvency
There’s a common misconception that “you paid into SS so it’s not an entitlement, it’s money you’re owed”.
Hahahhahahhahah
That’s not how SS works. People currently paying into SS have their money taken directly by people currently withdrawing from SS. Any “extra” goes to other government spending. There’s no account with your name on it waiting for you to make withdrawals. You guys are confusing government shell games with private annuities.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on that one.

DB, you and I are getting SS, but it's going to just enough to get a cup of coffee. Not only do we have to pay for the Most Selfish Generation, we also get to pay for the Millenials college loan debt.DBTrek wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:45 amThere’s a common misconception that “you paid into SS so it’s not an entitlement, it’s money you’re owed”.

Well, SS is a plan whereby the government takes directly from the productivity of the current generation to pay for the benefits of the retired generation. In that way, I’m sure glad there’s waaaay more millennials than Gen Xers. Of course, when I look past raw population numbers and at the actual productivity of millennials, I’m like “we’re fucked”.

I'm aware how it works. The extra was never supposed to go to other spending. It was always supposed to be earmarked for one specific purpose. I've given SSI over $30K, just in the last 10 years. I don't know what my lifetime total is, but it's a lot.DBTrek wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:45 am

"Hey, give us all this money while you work and you'll get it back when you retire." That is the government telling us that. Sure, they lied, but that's why I call it theft. If my kid takes money I gave him for shoes and spends it on drugs, he stole my money. You disagree?

So the upshot here is you don’t think SS is working the way it’s “supposed to”. Well, there’s a difference between what’s legally mandated and how people feel things are “supposed to” go.
Which is why it’s really important people vote with their knowledge and not with vague ideas of how things are supposed to go.
/shrug
Seattle is a disaster case study of people voting according to how things are “supposed to” go. I live it.

Feel free to show me where in the SSI law that the government can confiscate funds to use wherever they want. I'll show my point.
Not a word about "any ole' thing the government wants."Sec. 1601. [42 U.S.C. 1381] For the purpose of establishing a national program to provide supplemental security income to individuals who have attained age 65 or are blind or disabled, there are authorized to be appropriated sums sufficient to carry out this title.

You’re the one alleging the crime of theft, the burden of proof is on you, not me.Kath wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 9:04 amFeel free to show me where in the SSI law that the government can confiscate funds to use wherever they want. I'll show my point.

Prove the crime.

Yet that’s exactly how it’s been sold to the American Public.DBTrek wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:45 amThere’s a common misconception that “you paid into SS so it’s not an entitlement, it’s money you’re owed”.

Stealing money is theft. Not sure what other "proof" you need.
