Nobody ever really views their own positions, policy preferences, or concerns as entitled whining.
I'm certainly willing to listen to your argument that acknowledging failed policy is synonymous with whining. Lay it on me, bro.

It's because almost everyone is smart enough to know that having positions or policy preferences is not the same as "entitled whining".
Almost.

But there's always someone at the left side tail of the bell curve.

Which failed policy?

There is a prediction of failure. But, really, what is the problem?

Amazon leaves? Big deal, go with it or find a new job.

Amazon stays where it is and raises its prime membership fees by less than a dollar a month to pay for expenses? Also, big deal.

Amazon, Starbucks and 50+ businesses pledge money to repeal Seattle head tax

Even Amazon is an entitled whiner, who should just move to wherever Amazon goes . . . oh, wait . . . that makes no sense.
Back to the dumb idea drawing board.

I think the real debate should focus on whether this particular effect of many large tech companies congregating in a single region constitutes a negative externality.

Normally, in the case of obvious externalities (such as the increased cancer rates surrounding a coal-fire power plant), I think the business actually should be made to pay for their negative externalities so that those costs actually get figured into their business decisions.

But on this issue, I am of the mind that this was the state and city governments' fault from the start by encouraging this in the first place because they wanted those jobs and the corresponding tax revenue. But that came with all these other effects that cost them more than they gained.

City planners really need to think more about demographics and the long term consequences of their zoning practices. While it seems great upfront to encourage yet another tech company into your city, the aggregate effects could cost you more than you gained.

City planners make decisions based on immediate gain (usually increased tax revenues) instead of the good of the existing residents. That's not good.

At some point, maybe Seattle would actually be better off driving out some of these companies? What good is the additional revenue if the existing residents get driven into poverty?

I think the precise boondoggle we're witnessing is, in fact, progressives treating high wage jobs like an external cost. But high paying jobs aren't coal dust that local residents are paying for with their health. High paying jobs aren't paper-mill fumes passing operating costs on to entire neighborhoods by driving down housing prices and quality of life. High paying jobs aren't leaking mercury into the soil and forcing our children to pay the costs with a lifetime on Minamata disease.

They're high paying jobs. They're a benefit, not a loss.

Except to liberals, who are like "High paying jobs force low wage earners off of prime real estate".

WORKING AS INTENDED.

There's also a sort of cognitive dissonance working here though. Many Seattlelites love artists, or want to be artists themselves, but there's no real room for artists. Seattle is a working town. It's a town whose identity is changing. Then again New York is a working city, but also retains its artists.

Is there room for art in Seattle or is it just about that high wage? Because it's about that high rent, and high property prices, and that high cost of living.

Look at what happened to the Hugo House.

You tell me, what does Seattle's soul look like? To me it's pushing art out, and becoming just this huge tech thing. Just offices and business casual, as office workers roam around looking for something that matters outside of their jobs.

Hugo House first occupied a 16,206-square-foot (1,505.6 m2) Victorian house originally built in 1902. Previous occupants of the building included New City Theater and before that the Bonney-Watson mortuary and funeral home.

In addition to administrative offices, the House included:

an 88/150 theater
a cabaret stage and cafe
three multipurpose rooms
a conference room
an art gallery
private meeting spaces
In June 2016, the organization moved to a temporary space adjacent to the Frye Art Museum on First Hill. The original house on Capitol Hill was razed and replaced with a six-story residential building that will also house the Hugo House beginning in 2018.
You ever been to the original Hugo House? Was a really awesome place.

Keep up the campaigning, DB, you're going to win.
