Language is the big carrier of culture. The usual pattern of integration is that the first generation struggles with the language of their new home country. The second generation struggles with their parent's language and the third generation doesn't learn to speak the old language.

How well does that describe the Hispanic immigrants in the US?

Spanish is the second language of the US. It’s been spoken here longer than English. It’s like Switzerland, only with 2 primary languages instead of 3.

Its accurate. Around here the third and fourth generation will often times emulate southern red neck culture. The bulk of the criminal problems actually come from the second generation. And the first generation gangs.

Same here in Sweden with all immigrant groups. Except for the Roma of course but we can't speak about that. :naughty:

Spanish speakers in the US are often not part of any immigrant culture. Puerto Ricans are citizens and large parts of the US were originally Spanish territories. The oldest city in the US is Spanish.

Sweden is so different from a melting pot like the US that I can't imagine comparing them as far as immigration is concerned. We wouldn't exist without immigration.

You do get to choose your culture, or create your own.
Right about the second part, but as for the first part: You can choose to want to become part of someone else's culture, to want to adapt their culture... but you don't actually become part of that culture unless the other members of the cultural group consider you as one of their own.

Funny.

When she says Spanish, she thinks she's talking about border jumping Mexicans, but what she's really talking about is straight, white, Christian Europeans.

Nope. Mixed in Puerto Rico, and mestizo in a lot of other places. They didn't stay Spanish
for long. And all part of the culture.

So? If they’re ambitious then they’re more American than many these days. I see people starting businesses, working like dogs, and buying houses and fixing them up. They’re right on track.
