Little experiment: go to a truck stop and buy a pair of cheap gas station shades and a cheap toy pellet gun. Shoot the shades from about twice arms distance with the cheap ass pellet gun.

For most impacts, a pellet gun is pretty close. The only difference is the hardness of the metal and the sharpness of it. If the glasses crack and allow a pellet from a toy gun to penetrate them, then they are basically like putting plastic wrap between your eyes and sharp metal pieces flying off a saw or whatever it is you are doing. I would just go with the full face plate mask, long sleeves, and leather gloves, if I could. If we are talking about cutting on metal, anyway. Wood I am not too worried about. Just use the goggles.

I am not talking about an actual air gun that you can use for varmint hunting here. Those probably would cut through legit safety glasses too.

I could see it knocking the plastic lens out, which is fine. Actual penetration though? Highly unlikely...

I spent a fair amount of time with the sheet metal guys on the flight line. They did not fuck around when cutting metal.

I would go with the mask, apron, long sleeve shirt, and gloves. It's not so much about the probability a piece will fly into my body somewhere but the potential damage of that does happen.

That's just a bit different than splitting logs... And I'm certainly not wearing all that while I do it.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that, then. the pieces generally fly away from you. I thought for some reason you were cutting metal. Definitely do not avoid safety precautions in that case.
