Meh. I already subsidize every major corporation. I probably bought you a dozen cans already.

The whole point of a Needle Exchanges is to exchange something. The addicts get new clean needles in exchange for old dirty needles and often a quick medical checkup. The main goal is to reduce diseases like HIV and hepatitis. Also to have a regular connection with the addicts in case they feel ready to take action against their dependencies. Go on a Methadone or Subutex treatment plan or some other rehab. It's about reducing harm.

Just handing out free needles is about as stupid as you can get. That's just virtue signaling with no effort put in to improve anything.

I truly hope your life goes in such a way that your view about how easy addiction is to overcome never changes. This is not sarcasm. People who are not "in the know," about these things are extremely lucky.

For those who have addicts as loved ones, the story is tragic. So, congratulations to you. In all, very somber, seriousness.

Which is why I'd be none too happy about a city government enabling my loved-one's addiction rather than locking him or her in a rehab clinic.

Throwing money at a person who is not ready to get treatment is literally just throwing money away. I hope you never have to know the pain of having an addict in your life. I mean that. If you think throwing them in rehab against their will is going to get the job done, you have no idea. I truly hope it stays that way for you.

I'd rather have a bunch of clueless people bitching about how easy addiction is to solve, than having them be in-the-know. It sucks that much.

If it doesn't get the job done, then they go back.

If people cannot sort themselves out without becoming a danger to themselves or others, then we should institutionalize them.

Why do people have to make simple issues complicated and complicated issues simple?

Rehab doesn't work unless the subject really wants change. It's just a waste. Better to make sure the offer is there when the motivation comes. That is why things like Needle Exchanges work. It keeps the contact alive and can offer hope if it works right.

Because a needle costs 80 cents and rehab costs thousands? It's like sending a kid who doesn't study to college and hoping for the best. Sure, you spend tens of thousands, but at least they .... uh...... got to say they .... uhh...

never mind; it's literally just a waste of money to send a kid to college who has no intention of studying or attempting to get a degree.

So you'd rather just keeping feeding them needles until they die on the street of a heroin overdose. Because you care.

And not that it should matter, but I suspect the costs of not institutionalizing people like this are far higher. Reagan just dumped the cost on the average person on the form of crime victimization, thefts, mentally I'll people all over the streets, piles of needles that have to be cleaned up regularly, and then the personal cost to families who don't want their relative to die on the street.
