Revolutions

Post by DrYouth » Wed May 16, 2018 5:37 pm

I've been listening to this podcast series by Mike Duncan... who also gave us the "History of Rome" series...

Never did listen to that podcast series... feeling pretty satisfied with the amount to Rome material Carlin put out....

I've listened to the English Revolution and the American Revolution and am just getting into the French Revolution...

There is probably more detail than I really need... but for the most part I am enjoying the series...

Fascinating how these revolutions came to pass and how easily they could have gone differently... Totally conceivable for example that England could have remained a republic if Cromwell had handled his succession differently...

The connections between the revolutions is also fascinating... America being populated by many englishmen much inspired by the English Revolution... The description of the various states and their origins also very interesting.

Looking forward to catching up on this podcast over the summer.

Mike Duncan is pretty damn good on the French Revolution.

Despite the untold trees and ink that have been devoted to that topic, I still feel like the subject is wide open. Duncan was pretty good on his take of the basic history, IMNSHO. I recommend it.

His Rome series is on my rotation as a going to sleep podcast. I never finished the bloodline appendix. Great stuff. I really enjoy his revolutions podcast but he's craming a PHD level of research into those and it's incredibly hard for me to keep abreast of the chain of events. It is very good though and I still will listen to it while Im working or driving or something.

There is no way to actually keep track of everything this guy covers...

I just let most of the details float past me and enjoy the rhythm of it... while attending to the stuff I personally find fascinating.
(Dragoons for example... and Levelers and such...)

I don't need to remember all the battles and minor personalities... cause it's not an actual course I'm taking... and I will forget most of it anyways.

With this in mind I can enjoy this podcast.

The French Revolution by Duncan is my #2 favorite podcast series. Ghosts of Ostfront is #1.

Revolutions is great. I liked History of Rome a lot as well, and listening for enjoyment rather than full retention is definitely the way to go. You'll still end up with more understanding than most lay-people.

Yep that's the one.
Cool to see that map... I never get to the website... The States were so small and cute back then. :D

Definitely agreee with the rest. I couldn’t hope to retain half of the information.

I’d like to have heard more about what was going on in the average lay -farmers life at the time. It sounds like it was just a constant stream of insanity, across the French countryside.

One of my favorites at the moment. He just finished up the Revolutions of 1848. 33 episodes about some 18 months. I love all the details even if I don't remember a third of it. Just going over it all fills in a lot of gaps and you at least know what to look for if you want to back to some detail.

The revolutions so far:
  1. English Revolution
  2. American Revolution
  3. French Revolution
  4. Haitian Revolution
  5. South American Revolutions
  6. French Revolution of 1830
  7. The Revolutions of 1848
The next one will be about the Paris Commune 1871.

The best ones for me have been the ones I knew the least about beforehand. With this long structure, you get a real good feel for how the political theories of the times evolved from one thing to another and how that led to the different revolutions and also how they played out and the end result. I know so much more now about the origins of liberalism and socialism. I'm really looking forward to all the things to come as well.
Mike is moving to Paris now to write his biography on the Marquis de Lafayette so the output is going to slow down a bit for a while.
