How Britain and the US nearly came to war over a single pig

Post by Montegriffo »

Just randomly came across this article while looking up "thankful villages"

http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Hi ... e-Pig-War/
Cutlar: “…but it was eating my potatoes!”
Griffin: “Rubbish. It’s up to you to keep your potatoes out of my pig”.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

That was a good story, Monte. Good find.

I wondered if this was a better known story there than over here where it is not well known at all. Maybe more Canadians have heard of the event because of the Hudson Bay Company element?
Paging Smitty.....

No, it's not a part of the general American history body that you'd consider to be the most known stuff. Most of us don't even know that people live out there. Where's Oregon? Why haven't I heard of it? 8-)

Border wars do happen. To escalate them into something bigger is allways a political decision. And a Place where the border is left unmarked is just a pain in the ass sooner or later.

The interesting thing is that you can actually have two countries engaged in a war in a Place where there is disagreement where the border is, but otherwise have let's say cold, but somewhat normal relations.

The border war high up in the mountains, now quite peaceful...

The US Army should have landed on the island and expelled the pig farmers back to Canadia.

Oh indeed, we are well aware of the San Juan Boundary Dispute, fun fact; the Officer Commanding the 66 man Company of the 9th US Infantry deployed to San Juan Island, was none other than George Pickett, of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg fame.

One wonders if George would have been so gung-ho, if he'd known them Yankees were going to be invading Virginia next.

Do not fuck with American agriculture.
SJWs are a natural consequence of corporatism.
