WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, asked the Justice Department this weekend to publicly reject President Trump’s assertion that President Barack Obama ordered the tapping of Mr. Trump’s phones, senior American officials said on Sunday. Mr. Comey has argued that the highly charged claim is false and must be corrected, they said, but the department has not released any such statement.

Mr. Comey, who made the request on Saturday after Mr. Trump leveled his allegation on Twitter, has been working to get the Justice Department to knock down the claim because it falsely insinuates that the F.B.I. broke the law, the officials said.

Mr. Comey’s request is a remarkable rebuke of a sitting president, putting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the position of questioning Mr. Trump’s truthfulness. The situation underscores the high stakes of what the president and his aides have unleashed by accusing the former president of a conspiracy to undermine Mr. Trump’s young administration.

A spokesman for Mr. Obama and his former aides have called the accusation by Mr. Trump completely false, saying that Mr. Obama never ordered any wiretapping of a United States citizen.

“A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice,” Kevin Lewis, Mr. Obama’s spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday.

The claims about wiretapping appear similar in some ways to the unfounded voter fraud charges that Mr. Trump made during his first days in the Oval Office. Just after Inauguration Day, he reiterated in a series of Twitter posts his belief that millions of voters had cast ballots illegally — claims that also appeared to be based on conspiracy theories from right-wing websites.

Yeah, I read that memo and it hasn't proven anything at all. We kind of already knew that the FBI was looking into someone with Drumpf's team and that they probably picked something up during it. Also, the memo did state that the investigation was after Carter Page and it started over what Papadopoulos was blabbing to that foreign diplomat about. Plus, it proves that Mueller's investigation isn't a fraud at all and that a judge renewed the FISA warrant three times- which means that there was a judge that believed it was providing useful information on the target and not a witch hunt.

When you go to your local store and talk with Kuma, then Kumar calls home to Calcutta, that just made you subject to potentially being spied on.

Why in the Hell is the FBI spying on Carter Page for 5 years................. Ol Carter Page must be a real badass Russian Operative, I say Fuck that, he more likely pissed off an FBI agent at some point.............. remember, the FBI spied on Martin Luther King for 10 years.

Of course I have a problem with the burning of the 4th amendment. I also have a problem with the GOP waving their hands in the air and claiming special victim status over what is now considered routine spying on all communications.

The only way that this matters politically is if it was used against the DNC, which doesn’t even matter much because he won anyway.

It’s kabuki theater, at its finest. The republicans have near-total control of the government, but they won’t use it to stop general surveillance. They’re trying to turn the entire problem against political opponents, while changing nothing.

They are still listening, and will continue to. Hell, they’ll probably even use this as an excuse to end the farce of FISA courts, and put it all even deeper into secrecy.
