UpWork - Uber for tech workers?

Post by SuburbanFarmer »

Just heard about UpWork today on NPR. It’s a site for freelance tech work, hooking you up with people to do side jobs in tech.

Has anyone had experience with this? I see the fees charged are pretty high, but it could still be an excellent side gig I think.

You will have to compete with the third world, though, right?

Something like that would work well if you packed your shit and moved to Costa Rica. Then your costs of living would be closer to those of your competitors.

The future of work looks grim...

The platforms will rule all.

Best avoid tech unless you are very smart, willing and able to pursue a graduate education, and want to work in highly specialized fields like artificial intelligence. Go for work that has a security classification slapped on there, like defense and intelligence contracting.

Otherwise, like I said, move to Costa Rica and just freelance. You have to lower your cost of living to compete with the third world. It doesn't seem likely we can gas the libertarians and Mammon worshipers anytime soon.

Looks like 20%, but lower if you get a lot of jobs. There's also a $10/monthly fee for "premium" membership.

Another one: freelancer.com
