US homeless population rises for the first time since the Great Recession

Post by Hastur »

More signs of the poor state of US society. ;) What will it take to get more people aboard the success train that is reportedly chugging along greatly?

America’s homeless population has risen this year for the first time since the Great Recession, propelled by the housing crisis afflicting the west coast, according to a new federal study.

The study has found that 553,742 people were homeless on a single night this year, a 0.7% increase over last year. It suggests that despite a fizzy stock market and a burgeoning gross domestic product, the poorest Americans are still struggling to meet their most basic needs.

“The improved economy is a good thing, but it does put pressure on the rental market, which does put pressure on the poorest Angelenos,” said Peter Lynn, head of the Los Angeles homelessness agency. The most dramatic spike in the nation was in his region, where a record 55,000 people were counted. “Clearly we have an outsize effect on the national homelessness picture.”

Ben Carson, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which produced the report, said in a statement: “This is not a federal problem – it’s everybody’s problem.”

So were writing articles on a 0.7% change ? OK

It's not enough to get excited about yet. But lets keep an eye on it. Looks like we are in the same territory we were in 2013

Good point. When you look at the actual breakdown a lot of it looks like it's getting better. I don't have time to take screenshots right now but look at this:

If you take away Los Angeles the picture is lot more rosy. I wonder how much of this is an imported problem. Sanctuary State ftw. :handgestures-thumbup:

A lot of it is because of an "imported problem"... the other problem is that these numbers don't tell the whole story... these "homeless" are counted once or twice a year at best, and it's never accurate...

Let's also not forget that the majority of all our news has been negative... so take that into concideration as well.

Maybe we should let more foreigners into the country. Wouldn't diversity help our homelessness problem?

So California's housing fuckery is now a sign that the entire country is doing worse. Only the rich in CA can afford housing. Who has been running CA for decades? What major cities providing "sanctuary" to illegals are now dealing with the side-effects of it?

Interesting. California, NY and Florida are the bulk of the homeless.
I'm cynical so I wonder if the laws in those states dole out money to homeless.

If a habitually unemployed, uneducated, unskilled, drug addict can't make it in this country, no one can.
