Someone came in with the book Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche and decided to tell us that we as Americans need to stop spreading our "Americanism" all over the world. I asked them what they meant, and they started to go on about the book, etc... and how that people around the world see doctors in the US or visa versa and they are told that they don't like themselves because of "x" and are prescribed medication for it or another way of life...

Saying how male privilege is the reason for anorexia, etc... I asked them to explain. They told me that men want women to look a specific way and women think they need to live up to those ideals...

I asked, why does it matter what men think? Why can't women just look the way they want and better themselves for them, and if a man loves them, then so be it... if not, there are other fish in the sea.

She then said that male privilege allows it to happen, and then she went off in how a black man would get paid more than a black woman in the same situation... but a white male would get paid more than both. She said that they went through statistics on this in class, and it shows to be true...

I'm thinking to myself that it's illegal to do that... then she says how I could walk down a street and not worry about getting raped, while she couldn't...

Seriously? I'd be worried more about being mugged than raped if I was her in the first place... but I'll ignore that, it's a poor example, a tired one at best...

Then she was saying that I have more privilege than she does (she is a white female) and I'm thinking to myself, who's smoking what now?
