Before more accurate knowledge of physics, it was more about the "has worked earlier"-method.

I remember reading about how the built the Pantheon in Rome. They had it filled with sand inside to support the structures when being built. And how did they get the sand out? Easy, they had put coins in the sand an a little treasure beneath the sand for the Roman rabble of the city to get. The poor of Rome emptied the temple in no time of the sand.

Btw. after nearly 2 000 years (built in 126 AD), the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome:

Genius, I never heard that before.
h/t BroGrump, I like this topic.

I'll have to dig up the story on how some of the great cathedrals were built and how the Medicis were involved.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

I saw quite a few modern tools in there... very neat though.

I'm still trying to figure out how they paved I-4, since the Seminole Indians would not have modern steamrollers or even asphalt. Its interesting how Ponce De Leon encountered a modern civilization with complex highways systems and did not think to ask how it came about. Even Amway Arena in downtown Orlando is an impressive feat for a hunter gatherer society. It must have taken them years to build. What's even stranger is that it was built by this tribe centuries before basketball was invented. The Indians did a lot of crazy things that academics and history books tend to overlook.
