You can control the amount of moisture (for sure) and also helps against bug infestation. There is another method called, hugelkultur:

If I were doing it with limited space, I'd go with boxes like that too, coupled with the milpas concept for at least one or two. I was looking at a video last night where an Incan was explaining his villages terrace system. They can produce far more food than you might expect in some fairly rugged terrain. It might be worth learning how they do it, especially if you live on a mountain, which is basically what I want to do.
