Imagine if you ran into a little piece of debris, tiny little space rock falling in space in front you.

You are going to hit that rock at almost the speed of light.

How much damage would that do to your starship?

Mass times the speed of light. That would be an explosion I'd say.

You know what the crazy part is, there really is nothing stopping you from going that fast. And you wouldn't even feel like you were moving that fast, on your ship.

You'd just see all the stars in front as blue and the stars behind as red, but otherwise you wouldn't notice.

It's just a question of what fuel could you use to get up over 270,000 klicks per second and then slow down when you arrive, and how would you avoid running into tiny rocks and whatnot on the way?

There could be cities of sorts, but I think those would actually be artificial habitats

For example you may have planet which is resource rich, but not conducive to life.

So instead of living on the planet, you live in orbit around it.
I'm sure there will be some cities, but Space is going to a lot more rural and a lot less urbanized than Earth. Like you say, very small populations living very far apart.
What about a water planet, no land at all, it's very hot and high pressure, but instead of living on the planet, the habitat is an orbital ring around it, so it's a city, but it's linear, the size is spread around the ring.

No part of the ring is that huge, but the totality of the ring is massive.
Going to have long corridors.
I like the idea of a massive bridge over the galaxy's largest waterfall.
Sky Vegas, run by native Americans and the Russian mafia.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Interesting. What currency would they be using, I wonder?

No, the rest of the world is in space as well, under the UN flag.

Space War is Cold War.

See the trend in spec-fi these days is that America fights another Civil War.

I'm going with America fought a Second War of Independence from the Globalists.

So it's America against the world, but it's not a shooting war on earth

Just as in the Cold War, you can only fight by proxy.

Those proxy wars move into space.
