Well, I can't totally explain it, but if I were responsible for the stability of the global economy, I would probably have been very cautious about over reacting. I can't say I would have done any different when balancing the two disasters, public health and economic, against each other.
I do wish he would stop firing broadsides against everyone in order to deflect responsibility, and just be open about his decision making processes, where the info was bad, and mistakes were made. But, the fact that he is petty, narcissistic, and short sighted doesn't mean he was wrong to be cautious about shutting down the economy, or responsible for any of the deaths.
It's the prioritising of the economy over any public health concerns that I find the most troubling.
My suspicious mind is led to believe that reelection in November is his primary motivation.
It may be that Trump's motivation was saving his own hide. In fact, knowing anything about Trump, it probably was. That doesn't make it the wrong decision.
Hind sight is 20/20, but in the moment, I don't think prioritizing the economy was wrong. In fact, I still think the economic fallout might be so bad that it will make trying to save 500,000 people, many of whom are already chronically ill, will seem silly. Its possible, and not knowing anything about a novel virus, by definition, prioritizing the economy for any reason is a sensible thing to do.
I hear this bullshit at work too, prioritizing the economy by Bernie types.
The economy is very fucking important Monte. The reason that we can keep the insanely expensive healthcare appparatus in place that will pay for all these COVID victims comes from the economy. The Healthcare systems you pay for with your tax dollars require revenue from
(you guessed it!) taxpayers. People with jobs who are taxed. For that equation to work, you need money coming in. Grocery stores are part of the economy. People need to be able to work so they can buy things like food to eat while they are quarantined.
You realize that most small businesses are not profitable for the first few years right? Some folks spend decades of their lives saving scrimping and clawing to get one off the ground. Their margins are not as fat as you think. You probably think that they can just close for a few months and then open right back up no problem. Bull. Shit. It doesn't work that way, bills, insurance, mortgage, car payments, and children are fucking expensive and they don't stop because great grandma got the China cold. This is going to fuck up a lot of folks who spent huge portions of their lives putting all they had into their business to say nothing of their workers. The economy is the reason that you have a fucking healthcare system and all those social programs you like and aren't begging for rice with bugs crawling out of your ass.
I don't want anyone to die from this either, but destroying the livelihood of millions of Americans to say nothing of the restricting of their liberties and movements to protect a bunch of 80 year olds is a very fucking selfish way of looking at things imo. The elderly should do what they can to protect themselves, but we are going to be of zero help to them if we can't provide them with financial support.
