He also believes that it is impossible to grow total wealth. All earnings have to come out of someone else's pocket. You also can't increase an objects value by working on it.
That might be misrepresenting the case. I think it is fair to argue that fluctuating exchange value doesn't necessarily increase "wealth," depending on how you define it, since increasing
my wealth through exchange rather implies a certain amount of negative reciprocity.
Increasing an objects value by working on it could be viewed as transferring the value of your labor to the object in the hopes that the exchange value of the object will be higher than the combined value of the object without the work and your time and skill that could have been applied to another task, or even left idle.
Just sayin.

Say what?
How much is a pencil worth to you, given the literal impossibility of you making your own?

Much, much less than its potential value... given the literal impossibility of me making my own.

Wow, even by GCF standards that is a new low. Forget the mom and pop shops you had that well in hand, but the reverence for OWS when he called the Tea party and pussyhats "lowest common denominator" but the trust fund socialist in their hep c infested campsites was the high minded statesman we should have accepted as our lords and saviors. The hits just keep on coming from his stupid ass. See Kath, when dirty dick and English faggot are backing your play, it's best to reassess.
Couldn't even get to the whole "destruction of private property is criminal activity no matter how rich the target of the vandalism is," point until we agreed on the basic facts. Sigh.
Why are all the Gods such vicious cunts? Where's the God of tits and wine?

Nicholas Wade, in Troublesome Inheritence, argues that it was the result of the end of the warring states period. The new emperor needed to eradicate tribalism and inherited power (except his own), and created a bureaucracy that admitted people based on rote memory and conformity. This also had the effect of raising the average IQ so high. On the other hand, the extreme conformity and submission don't help with innovation.
The death of the 100 schools of thought is a major tragedy.

Not sure that I follow the rice field thing. It certainly requires some infrastructure, but European agriculture had organized irrigation systems for centuries as well, if less elaborate ones.
The centralization needed for rice cultivation and controlling the yellow river is orders of magnitude more than the kind of irrigation Europe has ever used.
