The degree to which, particularly left-leaning Americans the last couple of years have been fascinated with (their often wrong-headed) idealizations of Scandinavia is absolutely nothing compared to how much American culture has influenced Scandinavia for almost a century. The degree and scope is different because it's not just a isolated left or right wing thing here, whereas with your leftists idealization of us, that's generally not shared by the US right.

Or do you have TV channels where more than half of your programming consists of Scandinavian shows and movies? Have Scandinavian values about how to organize the labor market made the US abandon minimum wage laws? Instead of referring to yourselves as White American, Black American, etc. have you stated referring to yourselves as "Jyder", "Københavnere" and "Fynboer", and starting making jokes based on those differences? No? Then Scandi culture is not as overrated in the US, as American culture is overrated in Scandinavia.

The state has ALL the POWER that unions should have or pretend to have. The essence of what I said is correct.

Ah, the essence of it, huh? The state cannot prevent a general strike if such a thing should ever happen again. (Last one was in '97, I think). The purpose of unions is to negotiate fair pay, better working conditions, assist members in legal disputes, and in Scandinavia specifically also manage the unemployment insurance organizations. The only time (national/regional or local) government has a say in that, is if negotiations between employer and employees break down (and only if the breakdown is generally considered to have a significant societal impact, like a public transportation strike).

Is the EU a threat to that form of organizing a society, though? Yes, that much I agree with Hastur's views on the EU - although I don't know how he generally feels about Scandinavian unionization and the collective bargaining agreements. When the EU Commission appointed a Luxembourger for the Commission dealing with labor and trade, who has advocated and still advocates for a joint EU minimum wage (stupid idea even if I wasn't anti-minimum wage regionally), that made many people here wary. He has promised that Scandinavia will be exempt, but I fear it's only a short time before they'll renege on that and impose standards that appeal more to the lowest common denominators (like the minimum wage law countries + neo-liberals that want ultra-cheap Romanian or Bulgarian labor).

Never claimed Americans were doing it to us. We're (or too many of us, anyway) are doing it to ourselves. It's what mid-level elites have always done: Copied the fashions and trends of those higher up in the foodchain. Like the emperor's new clothes, or 16th cent. English court fashion that favored heavy fabrics to flatter their enormously fat king, or how almost all of Europe and even British mid 18th century upper classes spoke French, mimicked French fashions, trends and ideas.. just because they came from France which was considered powerful and prestigious. Or how the upper class Romans looked up to the older and, to them, culturally prestigous Greek culture. I enjoy lots of American things, culture included. But I don't make the mistake of assigning it a universal quality.

Not buying the Jew angle. They're not doing it to us, either. Americans aren't responsible for the poor national/cultural self-confidence of any foreign nationals.

In Scandinavia you need a bathroom permit to defecate in your own home. Once you send in the permit, the Department of Pipes and Gender Assignment goes to your home and inspects your toilet as well as your genitals.

Then they determine if your house gets a men's or women's room. This is a formality, as gender does not exist in Nord countries. Then another permit must be filled to put in the toilet.

Within 30 days, the bathroom must be up to code for handicapped people. Once it is up to code, the Danish government euthanizes the person with disabilities that the bathroom was built up to code for. This requires another form to determine if that person is turned into a lampshade or soap.

Finally a form must be filled out to determine who gets the gassed wheelchair person's possessions. A form must be submitted to the EU after this process. Last of all, another form must be submitted when you actually want to urinate and defecate. Keep in mind, you are required to hold in your shit while all this is happening.
