Any diplomatic solution would have to go through China, according to Bolton. And the ambassador sees only one viable option in dealing with China. And even it is something of a longshot.

“I think the only diplomatic play left is to appeal to China’s national interests and convince them to reunite the peninsula,” Bolton said. “It’s a hard argument to make. We should have started making it 15 years ago. So the odds of it succeeding are very limited, unfortunately.”

So what does that leave?

“Look, here’s the choice the American people have to make,” Bolton said. “It’s a decision every citizen is gonna have to come to. Are you willing to risk using military force now, before North Korea has an extensive capability to hit the United States? Or are you prepared to live from now as far as the eye can see with a nuclear capable North Korea under a regime like this? That’s the choice.”
