Milk (regular), (1 gallon)
Canada: 8.31 C$ (6.40 $)
USA: 4.13 C$ (3.18 $) -50.28 %
This is what tariffs do. They raise the domestic price of goods to match the import price. That's it. Nothing more. Full stop.

You’re so fucking bacwards it’s actually painful to behold.
If your domestic price is BELOW import prices then no one is buying the more expensive imports to the detriment of your cheaper domestic goods. Nor would RAISING the price of your domestic goods to match the more expensive imports make them more attractive to customers.SuburbanFarmer wrote: ↑ This is what tariffs do. You have it completely ass-backwards, which I suspect surprises nobody by now. No one passes tariffs to jack their domestic goods prices to match more expensive imports, you clown.

Not intentionally, no. They pass them to keep domestic workers employed when they can no longer compete.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:00 amYou’re so fucking bacwards it’s actually painful to behold.

However, once the tariff is in place, the domestic producers will raise their prices to nearly match the new import price. To do anything else would be foolish.
Those new profits “protect” the industry, and allow them to lay off innovation and quality, because their competitors are trapped behind the tariff wall.
So, you have higher domestic prices (see milk above), and shittier quality (see American cars), more profits, and the same workforce as you had before.
The net effect is to fuck up your consumers. Nothing more.
Clown.

Except that doesn’t happen because you put tariffs on imports that are CHEAPER than your domestic goods, not more expensive. Meaning the domestic goods start out as the more expensive alternative and therefore do not go up in price when tariffs artificially inflate imports to match domestic costs.
Furthermore, the rest of the world can still buy the cheaper imports, only your domestic industries are forced to pay for high priced domestic or high priced (due to tariffs) imports. The higher prices suppress domestic industries that rely on the goods under tariffs and demand goes DOWN, not up.
Bozo.

First - tariffs are never put in place to “match” domestic prices. Ever. They’re put at a much higher rate, so that they don’t have to be adjusted. The intent is always to completely lock out the imports.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:36 amExcept that doesn’t happen because you put tariffs on imports that are CHEAPER than your domestic goods, not more expensive. Effect on the consumer - higher prices.
II - you switched from consumer goods to manufacturing goods. Fine, you raise prices on manufacturing goods like steel, and the manufacturers raise their prices. Their demand curve is not the same.
Effect on the consumer - higher prices.
C - if you raise prices on the consumer, yes - demand goes down. Does the manufacturer lower prices? Sometimes, but it will never be as low as before, because you’ve distorted the market.
There is a base demand for cars and milk, no matter how high the prices go, because the consumer has no alternatives. They have to buy at the higher prices.
Finally, The manufacturers are only competing with other domestic manufacturers now. And if you think they’re all going to ignore the opportunity to collude, you are wrong. They have a powerful trade group now, that pushed for the tariffs, and their very next meeting is to discuss how high they can keep the prices.

Milk has alternative competitors that become more attractive as prices go up, and jacking car prices puts them out of reach of some consumers and makes them less attractive to all consumers, lowering demand. Consumers do not have to buy, ever.
Prices react to consumer demand, not to some conspiratorial stoner view of domestic cabals collaborating to screw the 99%.
Pennywise.

In a normal market, yes. In a domestic market, the prices will rise until they meet that competition. It will be as expensive as possible, without allowing small-time outfits to make their own. It's hardly economical for a family to have their own cow, for example. The benefit would be too small for the effort/expense.DBTrek wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:59 amMilk has alternative competitors that become more attractive as prices go up, and jacking car prices puts them out of reach of some consumers and makes them less attractive to all consumers, lowering demand. This is all monitored and managed by the trade groups. That's how the world works. See bankster price fixing of LIBOR, gold, bond rates, etc.
Prices in a FREE MARKET will respond to consumer demand. In the real world, there is almost never an actual free market.

Not so much, nutritionally. Milk is amazing for building and maintaining muscle, especially when combined with whey (another milk product). And the other substitute s for other milk products, especially cheese, are fucking awful (Velveeta). Further, I depend fairly heavily on probiotics in kefir and yogurt.
I am a white guy. I needs my milk.
Milk has already shot up over the years due to price fixing by the milk cartels, and if anything my milk consumption more than doubled.
