Tipping is optional too.

The poor chef is likely to be on £10hr or less though.
Kitchen gets cheated in the states by thieving floor employees. Almost all servers admit anonymously to pocketing part of cash tips.

The entire tip system is a fucking dumpster fire of graft.
Much more optional here. Most do tip but 10% or less is the norm.
I don't really do that kind of work anymore but I never got much more than a tenner a shift. Probably talking about twenty years ago now.
I don't think a lot of British understand that you will be expected to pay 20% on top in the US.
Americans are the best tippers over here, very popular with staff.
Clever punters buy the chef a pint as soon as they order.
I am not against paying tips if you want, but business owners should not get to pay servers like three dollars per hour on the basis that they are paid directly via tips.

When they extend that system to kitchen staff, and do absolutely nothing about thieving servers pocketing tips, then they are complicit in stealing.

Ending 5he tip regime does have some support here, but servers will throw a fit if it ever gets traction. They want to keep stealing tip money from kitchen staff and bussers, and they do not want to pay taxes.

Just getting rid of that special minimum wage exception would likely boost tax revenue a significant amount. Restaurants are everywhere now, raking in a lot of money, and most tips are never declared and properly taxed. It is really weird how the state lets that go.

In Seattle everyone from Subway sandwich cashiers to Terriyaki places have a tip jar on the counter. It was weird for me at first, seeing fast-food type places with their tip jars out. Like ... thanks for pouring the $5 latte, barista, but what am I tipping you for exactly?

Then I realized that everyone on the West coast constantly pretends to be oppressed by rich people, and that asking for handouts is not just a cultural norm, but a way of life for many folks out here.

That sort of shit disappeared here when the min wage came in.
It used to happen. I used to date a ballet dancer/waitress who worked for £1 an hour but got £70 a shift in tips. She paid no tax at all.

A phrase that sets of disaster sirens in British Parliament. If any phrase can guarantee a swift change is coming to U.K. policy, it’s “pays no tax at all”.

She worked in Westminster too. Just around the corner from Parliament.

Starbucks doubles down, says “Fuckit, may as well put needle boxes in the bathroom since we’re now the homeless junkie Free-Haven of coffee chains”
...In October, three Starbucks employees in Seattle told local news that they encountered hypodermic needles on the job nearly every day. They said they had to take antiviral medications to protect themselves from HIV and hepatitis.

Following the incident, Starbucks began installing sharps boxes in certain Seattle locations. Sharps boxes are containers that allow people to safely discard needles, syringes, and lancets that might otherwise pierce a trash bag and poke workers...

As we all know, the best method for ending undesired behaviors is bending over backward to accommodate them.

Sounds like liberalism is doing its job. Have fun, I guess. Don't move away from those areas.
