Any genre in particular?DBTrek wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 8:51 pmI'm reading some amatuer horror garbage collection because I ran out of meaningful shit to read after The Alchemist, Economics in One Lesson, The Invisible Hook, Dune, and Clive Barker's Books of Blood I-VI.
What's good, folks?
I mean, REALLY good?
My sister got me listening to some woke "The Anthropocene Reviewed" NPR ass bullshit which is 50% good, 50% Marxism, but it's hard to stomach. I listen to it or the 50% good half, and so no one can accuse me of being close minded or "not listening" to the other side. . . but, man... the 50% Marxist part just pisses me off.

Hmmmm. NOT romance.
I mean, greatness is greatness - so if you know a great one give it a mention.

If you like Audiobooks, I can highly recommend the audible version. Simon Vance is one of the best narrators around.
He went to meet Alan in North Hampton before making the recording. 60 hrs 43 min. He talks about it here.

CHINA
by Edward Rutherford
It's pretty entertaining stuff.
Opium wars, mandarins, court eunuchs, the Taiping and Boxer rebellions....
Stirs up nostalgia for James Michener... I read a bunch of his books when I was a teenager.... gave me a taste for history.
I remember Texas and Hawaii being noteworthy.

Thanks for the suggestions, all - that's exactly the sort of stuff I was looking for.
Those recommendations should hold me over for a while.
Going on a vacation next week, so I really appreciate the titles, I'll likely grab a few of them for the R&R break.
Hitting the woods, going for some cabin time.
Dropping out for a while.
Can't beat a book on a starry night.

DB, you need to get this.
He's actually a great narrator. I have listened to a few other of his performances.
Here's some bad news I discovered while listening to the sequel and painting my deck yesterday:
Ready Player Two is woke trash.
It's a knockoff of RP1, except this time instead of enthusiastically revisiting nostalgic themes, the author calls out all the "problematic" aspects of 70's. 80's and 90's pop culture. What's the problem? If you guesses "too white" give yourself a hand.
Also, the protagonist is now a sniveling, mentally frail coward who must repeated defer to transgenders and "brave" women to make the big decisions to save the world.
Oh - and the guy who built the free virtual-reality escape world that saved millions of suffering poor from their dismal lives is also an evil character now, because he's white, and he was creepy towards a chick he had a crush on.
A real dumpster fire.
