Ricci |
Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), was an Italian Jesuit priest and one of the founding figures of the Jesuit China missions. His 1602 map of the world in Chinese characters introduced the findings of European exploration to East Asia. He is considered a Servant of God in Roman Catholicism. He studied philosophy, theology, mathematics, cosmology, and astronomy. Ricci studied Chinese language and customs that made him one of the first Western scholars to master Chinese script and Classical Chinese, eventually becoming an adviser to the imperial court of the Wanli Emperor. He was also the first European to learn about the Kaifeng Jews.
