I've held very similar opinions for a long time. In fact, I've argued strongly for 100% government service at 18. Force kids to get out of the basement, off the couch, and do something. Some would do military service, others public services like you outlined.

However, seeing what's with the military and all the indoctrination currently. I'm not sure that's the answer.
