David Lean was a similar genius, he just didn't make many movies, none the less, Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai are a Magum Opus in two parts.

Coppola is in the pantheon too, he's just more hit and miss, none the less, The Godfather is generally recognized as the greatest movie ever made and Apocalypse Now Redux I think is the greatest war movie ever made.

I also love foreign films, Kurosawa is my Emperor of the Rising Son.

Or something more obscure, like City of God.

Or even more obscure, one of my favorites is a 1984 French comedy called Les Ripoux.

English title My New Partner.

I think the lack of magic early on was what made smoke baby an issue for me. It literally came out of nowhere ...... didn't she give birth like 15 minutes after she told Stannis she'd give him a baby? And Davos made a, "damn, that was strange," face, but he never mentioned it again. I think if I saw a woman give birth to a smoke baby, I'd have a question or two.
Davos knew some bad juju was going down, he just knew there was no point in going on about it, Stannis was obviously under her spell. The problem with magic is there's no logical limits to it. They can just literally pull something out of their twat! This is where the Potterverse ran off the rails on polyjuice potion and time turners. Once you have that stuff it's fucking chaos, anyone can be anybody, from any time. Any plot hole can be retconned.

One of my favorite shows for following their SF tech conceit down the rabbit hole was Dollhouse. It seemed pretty stupid at first, but they have the courage to follow it all the way down the rabbit hole by the time they wrapped it up in S2. You have to watch at least to S1E6 to see where it's going. I think this is a far better series than Joss Whedon's beloved other series, Firefly. Just hated that one.
We are only accustomed to dealing with like twenty online personas at a time so when we only have about ten people some people have to be strawmanned in order to advance our same relative go nowhere nonsense positions. -TheReal_ND

Babylon Berlin was a pretty sweet German TV show, one of favorite shows of last year. It's on Netflix, good stuff.

Alastair Reynolds is where hard sci fi and space opera meet, space opera within the laws of physics.

Revelation Space ftw.

I also enjoy Bill Gibson still, Cyperpunk 2.0 ftw
I read one Alastair Reynolds book, I forget which one but I enjoyed it

I think thats' where I"m going to go on my next sci-fi kick

I honestly envy you, I wish I could read them all again for the first time, Reynolds has a new Revelation Space Trilogy, but, I read them them faster than he can write them, so I'm jonesin again already.

Alastair Reynolds; Demarchists, Conjoiners, Ultras, and their Lighthugger's ftw.

I highly recommend the audiobooks by the way, many are on youtube, all narrated by John Lee, who is one of the best.
