Michael Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general who briefly served as President Trump's national security adviser, has been charged by the special counsel's office with making false statements in the Russia investigation.

He is scheduled to appear in the US District Court for the District of Columbia for a plea hearing at 10:30 a.m. He is expected to plead guilty.

On January 24, 2017, Flynn "did willfully and knowingly make materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statements and representations in a matter within the jurisdiction of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," prosecutors said.

Flynn allegedly falsely told the FBI:

• That he did not ask Russia's ambassador to the US at the time, Sergey Kislyak, to "refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia" on Dec. 29, 2016.
• That he didn't ask the Russian ambassador to "delay the vote on or defeat a pending United Nations Security Council resolution; and that the Russian Ambassador subsequently never described Russia's response to his request" on Dec. 22, 2016.

The one charge that Flynn is expected to plead guilty to, making false statements, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

The timing doesn't matter. All the Dems want out of this is enough to say "Flynn lied about Russia". The rest of the facts will be omitted and replaced with innuendos about collusion, election tampering, Trump, etc. They are hoping enough people take it and complete the picture on their own that Trump was aided by Russia to fix the election.

If you don't understand that Mueller gave Flynn a plea deal for a little as he could charge him with, you haven't been paying attention.

Flynn is pleading guilty to these charges.

The charging document is called an "information" which means that the defense agreed that Mueller didn't have to present the document to a grand jury for approval.

He got this plea deal because he is cooperating with the special council investigation.

Flynn’s plea signals the former top adviser to President Trump is now cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team. A brief statement released by Mueller’s team Friday morning does not say what information Flynn has provided the government as part of the deal, but people familiar with the agreement told ABC News Friday he has made a decision to assist investigators.

The general told confidants about his decision to plead guilty in the last 24 hours, according to people close to Flynn, who say the former adviser feels President Trump has abandoned him and has agreed to answer questions about the president or anyone else.

Flynn had initially resisted cooperating with the investigation, according to people close to the retired general, but he has been facing mounting legal debts and plans to sell his house to help defray costs.

He only recently learned the full scope of the charges he could potentially face. Last week, Trump lawyers received calls from Flynn’s lawyer Robert Kelner, alerting them that he could no longer participate in information exchanges with other possible Mueller targets, the first public indication that a plea deal was in the works.

On Monday, Kelner was spotted exiting a meeting at Mueller’s offices in Washington, ABC News reported.
