It's not just imports. When American companies set up shop in China, Vietnam, Mexico, etc., they are using $. I'm not sure of the ratio of Trade Deficit to this other form of colonizing via the $ but I bet colonization is a huge part. Add to that all the $ sent home by U.S. immigrants, legal & otherwise.
