Why do they have to be a defensemen on a contending team? Why can't you trade for one on an aging team, who needs to rebuild? It's hard to get that 1RHD sure, but don't act like it's impossible to get with either Nylander or Tavares, and a bunch of other expendable assets on the table, because it isn't.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:28 amName one team which has traded a pending UFA defensemen when they are contending?
You don't trade defensemen away when you're going to playoffs.
You sound like an idiot Leaf fan with this stupid shit.

The team you would be trading Gardiner too would be a playoff team which you might have to play.
It's idiotic. No team does what you are saying to do. Because its stupid.
If you are tanking, you dump your UFA, but playoffs teams don't trade assets to other playoff teams.
Name one team that did that. Which playoff teams traded away a pending UFA like Gardiner?

Forget Gardiner. Tavares or Nylander, choose one, trade the other, throw in a little extra if you have to get what you want, don't act like the Leafs don't have enough assets to get a RHD, they clearly do. Name one team who is offering teams with an RHD a Tavares or Nylander? If they were getting those kinds of offers, that changes their willingness to part with an RHD.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:32 amThe team you would be trading Gardiner too would be a playoff team which you might have to play.

Leafs have tons of assets, if they really wanted an RHD, they could get one, it just takes some balls.

The defense is not the problem, don't make a panic move, that's like something Marc Bergevin would do.

Rielly is the No 1
You don't trade Nylander for a No 2 defensemen.
Jake Muzzin is fine, he's been good, they don't need another Dman to win the cup.
It's not about that.
They could win the cup now, or next year, with the players they have.
Then you bring up Sandin.

Then trade for offense then, either get an upgrade on Nylander in the short term, or trade Tavares for some younger firepower that will pay off in the long-term. Don't panic trade, just wait until someone offers you a great deal, like the Avs waited on the Duchene trade, and pull the trigger.Smitty-48 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:39 amFalse dichotomy.StCapps wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:34 amForget Gardiner. Re: MHF - Hockey Thread
You can keep them both, but if you don't win in the Tavares window, you are going to wish you traded him in hindsight, and if you want to maximize your chances of winning in the short window with Tavares, butter soft Nylander ain't getting the job done. Unless the stars line up, and the Leafs win a cup in both windows, keeping them both is the worst of the three options.

They could win the cup now, with what they have, if they stop choking.
The team is good enough, the defense has been good, the defense hasn't even been the problem.
They simply have to relax and stop squeezing the sticks. it's mental fragility, and it's not been the defense which has flamed out, it's been Marner and Tavares who have gone cold.

Sure you can. They will keep all four of the Big Four, Nylander's not going anywhere now that he's signed.
