Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
I love our Firearm Freedoms in the US. In the last 5 years I'm often amazed at how small independent weapons innovators work to get around the Firearms Act of 1933.
The firepower legally available to Americans right now, is amazing. Yes, it's mostly small arms, but it includes a lot of Automatic weapons. Automatic weapons have their limitations and are mostly scary to untrained folks. But they are available, optics and weapons to be effective as any military sniper. And Americans have ammo, ridiculous amounts of ammo and weapons.
Carlin did a great job when he talked about the 2nd Amendment being as strange to outsiders as Japanese tradition of eating whales. It's a unique part of our culture that stems from the origins of our independence.

Most militaristic police I have noted was the Serbian Police in Albania before and during the Civil War there. Remember the Police driving on a BMP-2. Naturally they needed the firepower because they faced a genuine insurgency with machine guns and RPGs. The Serbs had this fluent transition from Police fighting the Albanian insurgents to the Armed Forces fighting them.GrumpyCatFace wrote:"No no no, son, it's not martial law because these are the Police. Serbian Special Police in Kosovo during the war. Assisted with a T-55?

More militaristic than the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Royal Uster Constabulary, Gendarmerie Nationale, or Bundesgrenzshutz? The Albanians? Please.ssu wrote:Most militaristic police I have noted was the Serbian Police in Albania before and during the Civil War there.
Quite sure GIGN could turn those Albanians into a pink mist, without even breaking a sweat. If the RCMP needed infantry fighting vehicles, DND would provide.
Honestly, the Serbian Police? Bunch of amateurs. That's like giving a BMP to the Michigan Militia.
GN is like SOCOM, GIGN, their JSOC.
Bundesgrenzshutz SEK? GSG9, ever heard of it? The Americans modelled Delta Force on it.
A BMP, against GSG9? Those Serbs wouldn't stand a chance, mate.
If you gave them air support, the French and German police could defeat the Serbian Army, never mind the Serbian Police.

Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
Interestingly the FBI created it's SWAT team after they understood that the Delta Force, the Army's counter-terrorist unit basically would go in and kill the terrorists, and not giving much thought on the legal aspects. I don't know how many Police Departments in the US do have SWAT teams, but I assume the number has risen.
What I think still is lacking in the US is the equivalent of the OMON of Russia, Special Police force basically trained as Special Forces and can be used (and have been used) in wartime situations. Basically a force that you can deploy both at peacetime and in war. Would this be similar to the Gendarmie I'm not sure. Of course the US has it's National Guard, but that may be too "Citizen Soldier" like for the people that love Special Forces.
Soviet OMON troops in Latvia with a BDRM-2 recce vehicle during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Two OMON troops having a laugh in Chechnya. Strange photo btw.

Well again, if you turned MI5 and Special Branch loose on the OMON, no holds barred, those OMON chaps wouldn't be laughing about it, bet that.

Re: THE ERA OF TRUMP
Yeah well, when you talk about GIGN or especially GSG9 or any Western anti-terrorist group, you must remember that the DO follow the instructions and the commands of their leaders. And the political leadership in these countries are (luckily?) quite pacifistic. The GSG9 can put a lot of bullets into a RAF terrorist, but it will raise a lot of debate in the German political leadership. The French can operate quite freely in their past colonies, but in France they are under a microscope in their actions.Smitty-48 wrote:More militaristic than the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Royal Uster Constabulary, Gendarmerie Nationale, or Bundesgrenzshutz? Someone like Slobodan Milosevic won't look at things like human rights or what actually the legal system allows when he sent the Special Police into Kosovo. Hence those "policemen" will likely behave more like ordinary infantry. If you see the enemy, you shoot it.
That's the reasoning here.
