Actually, I find Mattis to be both an intellectual, and ultra professional, he operates entirely within the confines of national and international law and the laws of armed conflict, he doesn't actually have a blood lust at all, quite the opposite, Mattis is not like some sort of comic book anti-hero who goes around slaughtering people with abandon, he's the polar opposite of that, which is why "Mad Dog" offends his sensiblities.

Like, if this is the X-Men, Mattis is not Wolverine, he's Proffesor X.

Bear in mind, Mattis is famous for Fallujah, but look a little closer, because Mattis went into Fallujah with a Hearts & Minds model, Mattis was all Hearts & Minds about it, then when the Blackwater guys got hung from the bridge, it wasn't Mattis who freaked out, it was the Bushies back in Washington who freaked out, Mattis opposed charging back in there to crush them, he said rushing back in would be a mistake, but Bush gave Mattis his marching orders, and so Mattis said "yessir", the only reason Mattis got pissed off and said "if you're gonna take Vienna, then take fucking Vienna" is because the first time the Marines went in there, Bush called it off because some civilians got killed, and when Mattis finally got the go again on it, the reason he went hard, was not to make it as bloody as possible, but to reduce the blood spilled, Mattis is aggressive, because he knows that the quicker the engagement can be resolved, the fewer people will be killed.

Aggression and bloodlust ain't the same thing, the ultimate agressive manuever, is the coup de main, where you manuever to end the engagement decisively, before it even starts, nary a shot fired if possible, the coup de main nary a shot fired, is the pinnacle of military agressive execution.

An example would be when the Russians took Crimea, that was a coup de main nary a shot fired, a perfectly executed military operation, dictionary definition of. If you can seize all your objectives, without anybody being killed on either side, in record time? That's total victory, there ain't no victory sweeter than that. The number of casualties suffered to achieve victory, is just the count of how far you fell short of that perfection.

Unless you are waging a genocidal war that is, but I've never seen nor heard General Mattis ever advocate for that.
