He did an illegal wet start to create a big flame when he fired the engine up, which is what caused the original rocket to launch. His dad was an admiral, though, and that little fact was left out of the official reports.

That's not what happened, a VF-11 F-4 discharged a zuni rocket into an A-4 directly across the deck, due to a power surge in the electrical system, McCain's A-4 wasn't close to the F-4, it was across the deck right in the line of fire.

If you look at this video here, there is an F-4 to left of the screen, that's the plane which discharged the rocket, into the A-4 which is totally engulfed in flames, the A-4 to the right of that plane, partially engulfed in flames, that's John McCain in that jet there.

"for some unknown reason, a plane parked near the carrier's island, midway up the 1,045 foot flight deck, experienced an 'extreme wet start.'

That's exactly what happened. The USN just glossed over it and concluded it "just happened", but everybody knew what happened.
