Missiles and Torpedoes > Lasers and EMP

Space rail guns probably fairly effective at close range as well.
Ship to ship combat in space would not only be difficult, it would be costly.

Also, you're likely to have multiple colonies in the same places.

It's more like French & Indian war, your colony is competing with another colony, and you get into tribal war.

Space war is basically land war, just on other planets.
Army making a comeback in space. Navy and Air Force less relevant. Convenient for former infantry writing about Space War, puts it more in your wheelhouse. Especially with it being like Space Vietnam, right up your alley.
The Space Navy is ruling the waves, Freedom of Navigation, King Dollar, but if you get out of the boat, then you're in Space Vietnam

I just want to post this again because I am drunk and the jam and images are really cool.

I think it's really cool how Games Workshop tried to make female space Marines to attract female players and the community said, "k den"

Like a Space Marine has to be more than his spacesuit,

He has to be an asymmetrical warfighter.

Maybe they go in covert without the suits

Maybe they are in a hab where gunfire is not feasible and they fight hand to hand.

Other times maybe they are inside a cargo container which gets delivered, then they pop out in the loading bay.

Talking of hiding in cargo crates, the human trafficking opportunities are going to be lucrative.
Migrating to the more successful colonies is going to be expensive. The less pleasant colonies are going to require a bit of indentured Labour or even press gangs.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Well like my first idea for a space war is that the dispute in on earth, but it goes proxy on Mars.

So the United States is in conflict with Europe.

The European colony forces decide to take the American colony on Mars as hostages.

They encircle them as leverage, the Americans are under siege.

Then the US Space Force has to launch a rescue mission to Mars to free the American colonists.

Remember the Alamo on Mars

The navy uses particular rounds to prevent hull breaches. Space Marines are known to abandon their armor and take up civilian garb but it's a bit diffult because they are genetically engineered to be Hectors of massive size and strength. They can pick up a small rock and flick their wrist sending the pebble clean through a skull if they want plus all their training they go through any of them can be covert ops. Typically assasins or recon infantry will fill that role but some sections of Astartes have to do everything. Spez Marines are basically like special forces on steroids. Even though most of them prefer to line up and bash shields there are some like Reavers that prefer stealth and such.

Like some of them specialize in behind the lines covert ops. They have active camo and sensor jamming armor with quiet jet packs and power blades. They will infiltrate enemy lines and take out high priority targets. Most spez Marines will just charge the enemy and bash them in the head with a power fist after their heavy bolters run out though.

Okay, but I'm only operating a hundred years out from now.

So dial it back to 2120 politics and tech, in this solar system.

Like some things in 2120 will be very high tech, the AI, the robots, the computing power will be massive.

But the people will still be people, the troops might be enhanced, but they're not going to be superhuman.

That's what's so appealing to me at least about the WH40k universe. It's not some golden age full of miracles it's a dark grim place. Humanity has fallen in orders of magnitude and will never recover even if given enough time. There is no more time left the galaxy is on fire and soon Chaos or nids will claim it. Those that are aware realize the only thing they can put faith in is a God Emperor that has been dead for 10,000 years and the strength of their steel.
It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
